That's V13 which is the train that goes to the Chesapeake & Albemarle Railroad for their rock loads. Typically comes in loaded around 8 to 10 PM and goes back west empty around 1 to 2 in the morning. You got lucky and caught a VERY rare daylight run! Nice shot!

I live on this line. CSX peninsula. No fixed time but L217 runs daily-weekends (that local to Richmond) L215 Runs mostly Monday-Wednesday-Friday. Coal trains vary and are hit or miss. Amtrak is twice a day or three starting soon. I have some a lot of videos on my channel. Happy Peninsula railfaning!

Positive Train Control.......the older signals wouldn't work with that so they were replaced with modern signals.

I’m taking a trip to Newport News from Maine, I was wondering how often freights run in Newport News and Norfolk. Does NS ever make an appearance in Newport News or is it just CSX there?

Newport News is all CSX (and Amtrak too). Traffic on the Peninsula Subdivision varies as most of the trains on that line are "as needed" (primarily coal)
