Disk Utility would not give me the option of erasing the SSD I have to a Mac OS Extended Journaled format.. it only had APFS, so I had to go with that.. I'm wondering if that's ok..? Thanks

Sorry I'm quite unaware when it comes to IT terminology, so I have a few questions 1. what is RAM exactly and how do I check it? 2. how do I make sure I really have an SSD hard drive? I wiped my Mac's entire hard drive and renamed the remaining hard drive icon that said SSD something to 'Macintosh HD', the usual name of Mac hard drives. When I try to use Time Machine, my Mac doesn't recognise itself to have any hard drive to use. How do I fix this or do I need to take my Mac to a professional? 3. I've understood USB drives are just like built-in hard drives, just external. I've seen USB sticks that have 16 GB, can I buy one of those instead of a larger physical hard drive?
