I used to think that punk/alternative was just a Brit thing. After all..what did dumb yanks know...then I bought the 12 single of this...OMG...sanity and sarcasm.....SO GOOD. Thanks to other US bands who proved themselves....DEVO/REM for instance.

The real “30 Seconds Over Tokyo“ raid in WWII was planned in an Air Force base near my hometown in Florida. As a cub reporter in the late ‘80s, I interviewed one of the last surviving “Raiders” - and it really was a “suicide mission.“ Aviation technology of the day meant there was no way for the bombers to drop their payloads and get back to the carriers - so all but one of the planes had to crash land. One crew was captured in China and executed by the occupying Japanese. Another crew spent the rest of the war in a Russian prison. The man I interviewed told me the crewmen each bailed out with nothing more than a compass, a pocket knife, a canteen, and maybe a chocolate bar. After the raid, they all bought a bottle of brandy and agreed that the last two Raiders to survive would drink it. At the time of my interview, there were just a handful of them left.

The raid happened very shortly after Pearl Harbor, and psychologically, it was a big boost to the Allies - and a big shock to the Japanese, who didn’t expect to look up and see American bombers overhead.

Listening to this album again it strikes me how very coherent it actually is in approach, sound, 'colour'. It's the first time I realize that. It's very different from other Pere Ubu albums which are in their own right very coherent as well I'd say. Maybe we should start referring to David Thomas primarily as a composer.

In my opinion a great piece of different music. The sounds are incredible and fascinating. I guess this is a David 'Bird' Thomas composition: David Thomas releasing the birds inside.

It's got the raw wall of sound approach that people like Iggy Pop and Steve Jones have managed to capture in their work, Pumping for Jill, Bang Bang by Iggy, Mercy, With you or Without you by Jones. Straight forward to the point and fun .
