Nice video. I haven't been there in about 35 years but, northeast of the mill was the dam. It was a beautiful stonewall dam. I was impressed that the wall capstones were stapled together. At that time the pond was almost full of sediment. Someone was proposing to put fish tanks in the mill and fish farm. I thought that it might weigh too much for the mill floors and I was concerned about the heating. Good Luck, Rick

Viewing your excellent video brings back a lot of good, and bad memories. I worked there in the education building, which is now part of the Job Corp campus. I was a program aide in the classrooms there from 1978 to1979. I never worked in the dorms, or the hospital, but often had to pick up students, and go into their dorms. I saw things ranging from great caring to outright abuse. I wonder how they ever got rid of the smell of urine in the Evergreen Building that now houses the Phoenix House rehab! Or the stone trough the residents were hosed down in! Some of the child residents at the center were getting prepared to move to the first group homes, as part of the de-institutionizing process, going on at that time. It was a great day when that place was finally closed. The article, about the center, in the Providence Journal, was correct when their headline read,"The Beast Is Dead." I wish that my dad, a reporter for the Providence Journal newspaper, was alive to read that article! He and another reporter had done an expose of the Ladd School back in 1956, called the "Forgotten Two Percent." Supposedly, the land is haunted even though most of the building are gone. it wouldn't surprise me in the least that it is!

This is extraordinary, for ALL the wrong reasons. Thank you for sharing it, even/especially at this late date. Didn’t someone just pay a lot to prevent a “tax sale?” And doesn’t have to mean a plan to claw this nightmare back from the brink is still in the works? Are the forces of inertia in Scituate really that powerful? In the absence of affordable housing in our town what is actually the driving force that has prevented any meaningful progress in this critical area. So many questions with no rational answers, so little time…

Yes, very sad indeed. The architecture and materials used back then is unequaled to what is built today. I do hope that it can be developed as planned to restore the original stone building to original condition so this piece of our history will not be lost. Thank you for your wonderful video. I suspect that the mill buildings are too far gone for the current developer to proceed with his original plan. The developer's original plan called for 175 apartments. At this point, the frame of the original mill buildings have largely collapsed. What's left of the existing buildings' wood frame has rotted. The collapsed interiors of the buildings are filled with lead paint and asbestos. All that can be safely salvaged are the facades of the main buildings. To clean out the contaminated debris from the exosting building install new building frames, align the new frames with the existing window openings, create a proper foundation to support the new frame and to tie the new frame into the remaining facade would be enormously expensive. @@Michael-RI
@Michael-RI Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this update. Very disappointed that there may be no chance for reviving and repurposing at least the stonework part of the mill. No doubt about all the contaminates being a very costly undertaking for anyone interested in that property. Please keep us all posted should any new information about the mill that may arise.😥@@pldevries
@pldevries Жыл бұрын
On August 10, 2023, the Scituate Building Official ordered the mill buildings (those with with partially or totally collapsed roofs) demolished immediately citing the state building code. He also revoked an existing building permit which the mill owners had not acted on in over a year. He declared the mill buildings to be unsafe. He cited likely movement of exterior walls and the partial or total collapse of the buildings. On Aug 31st., engineers from a Providence engineering firm were seen inspecting the mill buildings presumably called in on behalf of the building owners. Over the past decade, there has been no effort made to repair or maintain the Hope Mill buildings. It's been a decade of demolition by neglect.@@Michael-RI

Since no demolition or construction has started, there may not be any hay bales in place yet not to mention that the town and DEM would be monitoring work underway. It seems like nobody has much interest in RI but I grew up there and spent summers at Matunuck. I used to walk the shoreline to Jerusalem and out to the end of the west jetty. My father would take us to Galilee to go clamming, and to the annual tuna tournament, and to enjoy the fantastic seafood at George’s. This is the third RI vid I’ve responded to today because of the dearth of other posts. It must be a nostalgia thing.
@Michael-RI Жыл бұрын
East Matunuck was the beach I visited the most as well as Galilee and often walked the jetty watching the boats and fishermen. Loved George's the way it was back then and remember when George himself was there running the place. Was a simple business and not the upscale version it has evolved to. We used to go in there with sandy feed and wet bathing suits and sit on the stools for some clam cakes and chowder or get them at the takeout window. Nice to hear you have similar memories of the area. It is certainly a nostalgia thing for me as well. 😊😊😊👍👍👍

It's amazing how our city leaders did nothing to save rocky point! But bent over backwards go get the western hotel and the now falling providence place mall built. Owners of those projects were able to as we call it give our city officials fat brown envelopes. State of Rhode Island could easily taken over Rocky Point instead they spent millions building Kennedy Plaza over three times. And now again in 2023 there coming up with plans to revitalize Kennedy Plaza. But as a resident of the State of Rhode Island I'm pretty sure me or anybody else that lives here is surprised hell we let the Pawtucket Red Sox walk away so we can build a soccer stadium
@Michael-RI Жыл бұрын
That may be true perhaps, however, large developers were foaming at the mouth to get that land and build condos on it but the state DID step in and took over the property making it a park for the public. It would not be realistic for the state to run an amusement park as a business which is what it was, a privately owned business.
@barryflanagan6665 Жыл бұрын
@@Michael-RI you're absolutely right about the state stepping in taking over the land but there was a reason behind that and as someone with inside knowledge! if you remember going back to when buddy Cianci was mayor of Providence he had a dream of building the Renaissance city which was basically buying up all the land on the port of Providence and turn it into hotels and condos but there was two owners that refused to sell which was the cohens who formerly owned promat Marine Service which is now Sims Metal Management and Dave Collins which is the person that owns the building where Pete's Tire Barn as they said that they would sell but they would sell for ten billion dollars because they knew that developers wouldn't pay that much so they had no choice but to renege on the plan which left the city wondering what they were going to do with Rocky Point which gave them no opportunity but to take over the land so the state of Rhode Island in the city of Providence had no choice but to take over the land where no one can develop on Rocky Point. Just a little inside information

As a resident and a homeowner in the small town of Hope it is and was a beautiful building with a dark history behind it! Many tunnels ran underneath it so the slaves that were used to run that Mill weren't seen coming and going and the house that at least one tunnel went to still stands today.
