Really great video, especially to start the year! Last night I rewatched 'My Night at Maud's' and just love it so much. I've also thought that Rohmer has probably become my favorite filmmaker and currently it's going back-and-forth between him and Bergman (who's been my semi-official pick for a long time). Ozu, Rossellini and Dreyer would probably round out my top 5, if I were to make one. I would love to read 'Lie with Me' (The main character in Jedrowski's 'Swimming in the Dark' also mentions Truffaut among other artists like James Baldwin). I think I will do it this year, probably in the summer time. 'No Longer Human' has been on my radar for quite a while; let's see if I get to it this year. Your manga collection is so impressive and also intimidating and something I would like to tackle, but I have so little space at the moment to buy the kind of thick books you display (for that reason I've really reduced my book purchasing quite a lot). Your weight loss journey is truly inspiring and it's also motivated me to do some small but considerable changes in my eating habits. Thank you for that and I wish you a lovely and wonderful 2025, dear sir ✨🌈

Merci 🍑. My Night at Maud's is probably his best film, I loved my rewatch of it last year. Rossellini is close to entering my list, I need to watch more of his stuff soon like Il Messia. Manga collecting is fun but also very expensive and it takes a lot of space like you said. I probably need to get a new shelf sometime this year. I noticed today that I had gained a little weight back as I ate too much during the New Years festivities, but now I'm back on a fast, so that will drop off quickly. I'm happy that I have motivated you to make some changes as well 🤗❤.

Wonderful discussion about a wonderful film. I think this and 'The Red Shoes' are both five-star films, but I think I might prefer 'I've Always Loved You' ever slightly? It seems to me that it goes deep into character psychology even more than the Powell + Pressburger and the subterranean torrents of conflicted feelings and emotional states kind of had me under a spell. I think the ending is definitely optimistic and quite feminist as Myra realizes that the basis of her infatuation with Goronoff wasn't really love (which is selfless), but some strange amalgamation of raw sexual attraction based on domination, possessiveness and passion. Once she realizes this, she can see what love is and looks like and that is George. Really looking forward to rewatching this as it feels considerably forward-thinking for its time.

I think I will need to rewatch The Red Shoes in the near future to compare and contrast the approaches between these two films. I agree that this film is very impactful in how it deals with individual psychologies and interpersonal realities. I too feel that the ending is optimistic and I felt quite emotional during the final part. I do like that the film still leaves enough breathing room to reflect on these things and ultimately draw your own conclusion. It's not heavy handed. Crom the Vulgarian is the Indiana Jones of Cinema! Oh and I also appreciate the film's more intimate approach to a story that could have been told with greater grandure and pomposity. But then the flesh, blood and frailty, and much of the beauty would have been lost in the process of scaling it up. I recognize that this may not have been entirely by design and perhaps limited budget may have had a part to play. It is nice that vision and circumstance came together in this fortuitous way.

@VulgarianTroglodyte29 күн бұрын
Hi Steve. I study Japanese a little bit everyday, and I've learned lots of new words mostly very basic words relating to food and greeting people etc, but I'm still in a very early stage in my learning, so it's going to take a while for me to understand significant parts of these films. I've noticed now that I can pick up more words when I watch these films/shows, but most things I don't understand. The easiest part of Japanese language to me is the pronunciation as it is weirdly enough very similar to Finnish pronunciation, and I think my pronunciation is pretty accurate most of the time. But anyway, it is fun to learn the language.

I might re-read 'Winter's Tale' and read some frothy, whimsical comedy like 'Much Ado About Nothing'). While I don't consider myself as a Converge fan, mainly due to me not liking the shouty vocals which are often associated with metalcore, I have to admit that between 7:45-7:50 in Jane Doe is one of my favorite moments in music when it comes to drumming. I also don't really like drumming with a hyper fast tempo. One of my favorite songs is called Goodbye (album version) by a japanese math rock band called Toe. Their drummer is an absolute mad man and that song in particular is a great example of his personal drumming style. It is TV trash, but in a way it is perfect. (but one have to see first the other 2 films which aren't as good, IMO) 12) difficult. Maybe: Milano Calibro 9 (1972) 13) I should go for something obvious like Wong Kar-wai or Peter Greenaway or so. But I will go for something totally different and another underrated gem: Demon (1985) by Yasuo Furuhata. 14) pass 15) pass 16) well ... Indiana Jones? 17) Last Night in Soho (2021) 18) Tropical Fish (1995) 19) all films by Nico Mastorakis, especially: Death Has Blue Eyes (1976) and Blind Date (1984) //// And of course a lot by Jess Franco. But he need a category of his own. 20) Evil Dead Trap 2: Hideki (1992) :-) / A Quiet Place in the Country (1968) 21) Breaking the Waves (1996) 22) Hong Sang-soo or Sion Sono or maybe Apichatpong Weerasethakul (depends on his next films) 23) The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) 24) pass A great stuff I would like to mention ... But what can I do. :-)

Thanks for your answers. I agree that Climax is overrated, it has turned me off of watching more Gaspar Noe films, although I've also seen Irreversible. I need to watch Demon soon.

@@VulgarianTroglodyte I love I Stand Alone, Irréversible, Enter the Void that's why I was even more disappointed by Climax. What you say about Nolan is in a way true - but I think he has here and there a masterpiece: Dunkirk and Memento. -

Wonderful list, ma fleur! Even though I think I read on average two books a month, I can also relate to my lack of discipline in reading more due to anxiety-induced concentration issues (which also unfortunately translates into slumps in movie watching and music listening) and also because work can be time-consuming. I actually just re-started 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' after a failed first attempt (due to work-related stress) a couple of days ago and I'm confident I'll finish it in a couple of days. I am itching to re-read 'Crime and Punishment' and the Flauberts, as well. Your love for Huysmans certainly makes him a priority for me. Hopefully I'll get around to him at least before the year ends. I'm also very glad that you popped your Shakespeare cherry and with a positive impression. I started reading him near my mid-20s and I was relieved that I also got the hype even with the at times challenging language. I think 'King Lear' (whose influence on Balzac's 'Père Goriot' is very clear; I'd even say the Balzac is kind of the novel form of 'King Lear') is probably objectively the best, but my favorite at the moment is 'Winter's Tale' because you know ☺

Merci, my voluptuous God. I have concentration issues with films too, but not really with music. These concentration issues also affect how well I remember films and books sometimes. I have never read the Talented Mr. Ripley, but I'm sure I'll get to it at some point as Purple Noon is based on it and I love that film. I can't wait for you to get an intellectual high from Huysmans. I should read Winter's Tale before the year ends, maybe around Christmas time when I'm also going to watch Conte d'Hiver ❤️. But today I will have to somehow gather myself and get back to reading as I'm in a high, because the new Heartstopper season came out yesterday and I already watched it all😍😍. XOXO 😍🤗🍑

Nice list of books! I can't really say which are my absolute favourite books, I guess that depends on my mood. But I can name a few of mny favourite authors (or authors that were/are very important for me): Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, Fernando Pessoa, Vladimir Nabokov, Witold Gombrowicz, Clarice Lispector, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Philip K. Dick, Leo Perutz, and in a way (at least one book by) Angela Carter; and from my youth I guess H. P . Lovecraft. There are for sure more - but at the moment I can't remember ... Still have to read Huysmans (I just began Against Nature a few years ago at the beginning of a reading slump - so I never finished it).

Thanks! Many of the authors that you mention are on my to-be-read list, Borges and Pessoa are ones that I'm particularly interested in.

You crazy kids and your strange music. I only have weyes blood on your list and I haven’t digested her properly to make it onto a similar list. This video has reminded me to do a 2020s list.

Lovely list, mon chéri! It reminds me that I need to listen to the Klô Pelgag that came out in the 2020s ('Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs'). Looking very much forward to the new FKA Twigs. I also need to listen to 'XXX'; somehow it escaped me all these years.

Merci, Romeo the Towering God. Notre-Dame might be even better than the album I talked about here. The new FKA Twigs could very well become the best album of 2025, hopefully there will be couple more singles to ease the wait for the album.

I thought you would have at least mentioned Swans
@VulgarianTroglodyte3 ай бұрын
I haven't heard the Swans albums of the 2010s yet. Those are big blindspots for me. I've only heard 3 albums from them, all from the 90s, and those are really good.

That’s a great collection. Like Ronin, I winced a bit at the Kurosawa McD comment haha. You have lots of great titles. I wish I could find more on my movie hunts but like you say, the good thing is that so many are available on the various streaming platforms. I’ve just been on a UK trip and on my flight watched Hamaguchi’s latest, Evil Does Not Exist. Have you seen yet? I know Altaz is a big fan. I was really engrossed until the head scratching (for me) ending. A flight was definitely not the best way to view it so I’ll be interested in giving it a rewatch. I see Spike Lee has just about finished filming a remake of High and Low with Denzel Washington. Hard to imagine that can improve on the original
@VulgarianTroglodyte3 ай бұрын
Thanks, Neil. I have seen Evil Does Not Exist, I think it's a really good film, but it's not among my favourites of his. Spike Lee is a good director, but the High and Low remake probably won't be good and I don't understand why he is wasting time on remakes, he should rather do his own original projects.

Very fun video and varied list, mon âme and thank you for the shout out and thinking of me regarding 'Heartstopper' ✨. Hopefully I get to watch it soon. I recently watched Andrew Haigh's 'Looking' and it became a new favorite for me. It always stuns me how in sync I am with Haigh's sensibilities (down to the pop culture references), but the series is beautiful (made me cry at least twice) and a great companion piece to 'Weekend'. I am currently rewatching 'Six Feet Under' (probably my default answer to the question "what is your favorite show of all time?" when I was in my mid-20s) and I am so glad that it holds up so well. I definitely share your love for it.
@VulgarianTroglodyte3 ай бұрын
Thank you, Peaches. The trailer for the season 3 of Heartstopper came out yesterday, and I'm here anxiously waiting for the new season, it will come out in two weeks😍. I need to watch Looking soon, it sounds great. I'm glad you are rewatching Six Feet Under, I tend to rewatch it every two or three years, and it just keeps getting better and better. I started rewatching Merlin that I talked about on this video 😅, it has Anthony Head from Buffy as the king Uther Pendragon. Currently I'm in the mood for fantasy, I'm also thinking that I might rewatch Supernatural after this and then I've been thinking that I might try Charmed for the first time haha.
@vodkatonyq3 ай бұрын
@@VulgarianTroglodyte although I do tend to rewatch TV shows I love I don't rewatch them nearly as often as you for fear that they might wear out of their welcome for me (and also due to time constraints). This is probably the fourth time overall that I'm watching 'Six Feet Under', though. I think you will probably like 'Looking' (it's also not a big time commitment as its both seasons are not long and after that it's just a movie to wrap up the show). I've also been in the mood for fantasy and started rewatching 'Buffy' 😅(started season 3 today), so I guess I am just having a big TV phase at the moment rewatching two favorites at the same time (something I rarely do). I tried 'Charmed' and watched a few episodes, but unfortunately it didn't quite do it for me. The camp is there, but the show itself is really surface-level and I need depth and complexity to go along with my camp and fantasy. I will give it another shot due to Shannen Doherty (Brenda Walsh 4-ever 😅), though.
@VulgarianTroglodyte3 ай бұрын
@@vodkatonyq I try not to watch the favorites so often, but I just can't help myself. I have definitely ruined some shows and also specific seasons for myself as I have watched them too many times. Rewatching a favorite TV show is just so comforting, so it's hard to not seek that comfort on a regular basis. I recently had a feeling that you were rewatching Buffy, so I guess I was right haha. I usually dedicate myself to one TV show at a time, but I have sometimes watched an anime and a live action show at the same time. And will see about Charmed, it is often really hard for me to get into shows, so I'm not sure how I will feel about that one.
@vodkatonyq3 ай бұрын
@@VulgarianTroglodyte yeah, watching two shows at the same time is a big anomaly for me (the only time I've done that is with 'Buffy' and 'Angel' because they are related shows and they run simultaneously, so they're supposed to be watched at the same time). I hope you like 'Charmed' better than I do. What I watched is entertaining enough, but on a very, very surface level. And omg, how did you know I was rewatching 'Buffy'?! Eerie 😲
@VulgarianTroglodyte3 ай бұрын
@@vodkatonyq I figured the Buffy thing as you haven't been logging many films, so I thought that you were watching some teen shows haha. I remember you rewatched Buffy not too long ago around the time we had our first video calls, but I know that you love it so much that you could watch it again after a short break haha.
