I remember when I first heard this story on Letterman: "... and the Lone Ranger gets out of the back of my car ..." Funniest thing I had ever heard.

I came here thinking there is no way this story can be that funny. I was wrong.

Grew up waking up to him when I was getting ready for school in the 80's and then watching him on TV. Was sorrowed by the news of his passing. He was a kind of talent that you don't see often these days. Rest in peace Jay.

Linda Scalia - did he mean Clay Moore the REAL "Lone Ranger?" Am curious - I loved the Lone Ranger and the music at the end of the show - I can still hear the music.

I can't believe I never saw this story until hearing about Jay's passing today... It really IS. Or at least high enough up there not to matter. Maybe not as High as Jay was when giving the Lone Ranger a ride...

TV Talk Show Gold. Hence the annual re-telling. Dave hated alot of tropes and resisted all execs telling him he needed more traditional comedy and familiar bits for middle America. But he loved this format and loved a good storyteller. So much so that he had Jay Thomas do it every year and it killed every year. I looked forward to it. Many people did. Outside of all his tv character roles he was just a funny guy and could spin a yarn. Way too young to lose him. Rest In Peace. Poster you should retitle this the FIRST Lone Ranger Story appearance. I swear it got better, longer, and more dramatic every year. But seeing the first one is amazing. The whole interview is both comics at their peak.
