Nice singing. What is the name of the opera....in English? Was fasinated by the snow video in background. This opera looks familiar. Yes, saw some clips some wks earlier. With Lijun as the scholar. It was quite funny when Lijun tried to help the woman. But still don't know opera's name, so don't know the story.

Synopsis: a general lost the war and was wrongly accused of being a traitor. His only daughter Lijun (the eponymous heroine) was an accomplished girl. She absconded and parted with her betrothed husband. Dressed up as a man under a different name, she did well in court exams and was appointed prime minister. Three years later her betrothed won the war and returned as a hero. At the court, he recognised her but she dared not reveal her true identity because her father’s name was not cleared and she had now committed an unpardonable offence by passing as a man and had deceived the emperor. The hero (her betrothed) appealed to the emperor and both father and daughter were pardoned for losing the war before. Courtiers were trying to arrange a marriage for the hero as Lijun had not turned up. Under the pressure hero told the emperor Lijun was right among them, dressed up as a man. Emperor now realised his Prime Minister was Lijun. Struck by her good looks and wits, emperor was infatuated with her and tried to win her hand and make her one more number in his harem. Prime Minister ( Lijun) had to resort to her quick wits and her ingenious preemptive ruses to fend off the emperor’s advances. In the end she turned to the dowager empress for help who pardoned her deceit and made her the honorary princess. Lijun and her betrothed (hero) were married in the court, to the witness of the deflated crestfallen emperor. Her father returned from the front and they were all reunited. It’s a comedy showing even emperor cannot get his way all the time and love prevails, which is wishful thinking given the three thousands years of imperial rule in China. This is a lovely rendition of the story but the best performance, in my opinion, is by Shanghai Yue Opera troupe.

Tho I don't understand the language, do enjoy cultures esp. music. However, the lighting is a pity. The many varied colours of the costumes have been lost.
