How dumb do you have to be to fail to understand that inhaling cigarette smoke and its thousands of toxic volatile compounds might be bad for you?

That’s one of the best lessons I learned playing college football. There are rules, and then there are the “other” rules. The all-conference player lives by a set of rules that’s different than that of the freshman walk on. The quicker you learn to live and abide by your rule set the better. Life is not fair.

The directing on this show was incredible. 3:29 - Roger's face = "I think we're going to have a different conversation." 4:05 - "we're definitely having a different conversation." 5:09 - "shut up Don,I'm trying to save your job here." 5:20 - "here comes the the killer line." 5:50 - Don's face = "did I just almost lose my job?" Cooper asserted his authority with constructivness and class.

I just now noticed the look Don gave Roger when he took off his shoes and dropped about 2 inches in height. This show was a treasure trove of small details.

I had a younger boss try this “insubordinate” bs on me. After I got done with him he quit just before he was to be fired. I bought everyone pizza for lunch and they toasted his exit. 😂

Show wouldn't work today; getting fired is a blessing; you get to go get a new job making more money elsewhere because hiring budgets are bigger than raise budgets. Everyone would be excited to get fired, qualify for unemployment, and have a big name on their resume while they job hunt.

The bitter pill every man has to swallow. There are some people who have connections that makes them untirable. Most of the time they were raised with the pressure of you NEVER let the family down. That meant that they were usually very competent. It's the ones who were screwups.... l

Did he get screwed in his raise? Most definitely given the 1960s era. If he did that and got anything today, he'd be a master negotiator. Most jobs I've known will remove a highly skilled worker with 10+ years experience, asking for a modest 8% raise, and replace them with a newbie at half the cost if they can. Doesn't matter if quality of work or output of production fall significantly. Today, jobs will literally destroy themselves before giving involuntary raises (i.e. ones the company doesn't suggest themselves). They take a 2000s Bush era stance to workers: _"We will not negotiate with -terrorists- workers and unionizers." To them, it's the principle of giving in to an employee. Give an inch, and they'll want a mile. So instead, a company will sabotage itself into obscurity if they must. Generally, there's always a bailout button of some kind.

Bert was nothing if not consistent about what was important to the agency - here making clear that firing Pete was bad for reputation and business - and in the reverse situation in S1E12 making clear to Pete that "who cares" about his kompromat on Don (because Don is good for business)!

A stellar scene with many quotable lines from a show with many stellar scenes. The line, "...panicked, some people have no confidence in this country.", gets to me everytime. Plus, the Heisman Trophy in Campbell's box was a nice touch.
