Liked this video. I am new to digital modes long time SSB guy but ventured out due to all the reasons you stated. I have Winlink and use Vara HF via my Yeasu 710. Only made contact to myself in test mode this week. I will move toward JS 8 call and Vara c. Thank you for this video. Tyler KF5ETZ

I do Winlink and VarAC as well but I am learning more about JS8Call along with JS8Spotter and COMMSTATONE right now. I even downloaded, installed and played with AndFlmsg for Android today. Nice discussion about digimodes. 73 K5MGK

Just fuse the end of the line by melting it with a butane lighter or otherwise. 3M Scotch brand 33+ electrical tape doesn't grow on trees, y'know... ; )

So wait… people use fldigi to do QSOs too besides voice and CW? This is all so brand new. The digital modes bandwidth is so small.. how do you even find signals? Is there a ‘typical’ place to look? Thanks in advance.

It's a great tool for digital emcomm nets, but RTTY is a great mode to use on FLDigi too!

I fling my small, angled rock (with a string wrapped around it) underhanded using one arm, then after pulling string thru, attach heavier line(s); over many years, I've gotten to be pretty good & can usually get a line over a 50' treetop after a few tries; of course, the DX Engineering kit wud be great to have, but I started doing this decades ago, so why change, LOL!🇺🇸

Very helpful. One question; I have a simple interface from my Windows PC to my icom 706, and as such don't use the rig control feature. Why doesn't my frequency display ( top left corner) match the centre frequency display. For example, it may read 14070.00 for psk but the centre frequency will always read 7050.00 for example and I cannot change it by clicking on it...... Everything else works fine!

Without rig control, you aren't sending/receiving data that could change or view the frequency from your computer. If anybody else has better info, please drop it below!

What torroid mix do you use with the 64:1 ratio? 3 primary turns and 24 secondary turns..... You should do a video onnhow to wind it. Everything is geared for 40 meters and up, but I rin 80-40 almost exclusively and I want to set my EFHW's to run lower frequencies.

Great setup, great method. What is the downside of placing the throwline laid out between you and the tree. I realize as you are essentially throwing backwards over your head you will have to have line beside you or over your shoulder. My experience has been that having line between you and the tree makes it less likely the throw line will catch on ground cover. I like to have the line in front of me just in case I booger up the throw and need to stop the line before it gets hung up in the tree.

Hi, Justin Thanks for your videos. Do you have one specifically for the DX10? I’m sure that I’m missing something simple, but I can’t get fldigi to key the radio either on RTTY or CW. I configured flrig for the DX10 and I have rig control with fldigi. On a related question, how do you hear what you’re transmitting? I recall using fldigi years ago with an older rig and a signal link, and I didn’t have keying problems. Thanks for any tips you might have. de KC1NE

Great video, is there a way for fldigi to automatically switch to whatever mode the radio is listening to? I am new to digital modes still not familiar with what they sound like.

The RxID and TxID is useful for switching modes automatically, although the person transmitting must have TxID enabled and the listener must have RxID enabled. Experience also goes a long way. If you operate under different modes long enough, you'll pick up an ear for it.

Check your sound card config both in PC and Fldigi. Make sure they are using the correct sound card.

Justin, when I click on Use Hamlib, then go down to initialize it, the checkmark always disappears. I am having trouble transmitting and was wondering whether my computer is even communicating with my icom 7300.

First question is, did you install the Icom drivers into the computer before plugging in the 7300? If you're having issues with FLDigi still, I would recommend using FLrig to broker the connection with the radio.

How do you set audio codec option in your system, that area on sound card config is grayed out?

Its difficult to determine what the cause is without more information like rig, OS, and interface. I'd start by making sure the correct drivers for the rig or interface are installed.

Please share you radio, interface type (ie signaling, digirig, or internal soundcard in radio, etc), and computer/operating software. I find a common issue is not downloading the proper drivers prior to connecting the radio to the computer.

I have been able to find the issue in windows settings, had to adjust line in settings in windows which has corrected the problem. for recording, qso there is a 1/8" sterio jack on the back of the FT-847. I wired up a line connection as directed in the radios manual, but I seem to be picking up fan noise, and keyer clicks when transmitting into a dummy load for testing purposes, so not sure what kind of mess I will have when I get my HF antenna back up, audio levels are also low. I am using Audacity sound program. its a struggle, and thanks for jumping in. Regards Derek

What computer, OS, and version of the apps are you running? And have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software?

@@MailmanJustin strangely i have play by play copied the settings from this video series and now it works great. i dont know what caused this problem in the first place.
