Nice of you to offer Louise. Until my health situation is resolved I'm steering clear of buying new plants as my record of keeping them healthy is pretty poor especially over winter. I guess price will depend on size of the plant and whether its a rooted cutting, air-layer or grafted plant. I think rooted shoots and air-layers are best as even if they die back a lot you still have the correct variety. My purple guava is on its own roots so even with the expected dieback this winter i should still have the original variety. 4 to 5 foot grafted avocados and mangoes are around £75 here delivered but i would only want to pay £30 to £40 for a 2 foot plant as its less likely to survive the transport and climate change shock. In my mind I think I paid circa £80 for my 4 to 5 foot tall purple guava delivered which was a lot of money but then they are impossible to buy here. My 2 foot tall guavas mostly cost £30 to £40. I suppose the only guava that I'm missing that MIGHT tempt me could be a variegated guava 😂
@louiseahmedtropicalplantgr50006 күн бұрын
@lyonheart84 thankyou for the information on pricing Brett, dependant on size of course and whether airlayered or grafted, or rooted cuttings. I do prefer non grafted plants, as I found out last time alot of them were recently done with the tape still attatched.. I will definitely try my best to bring back a few varieties of guava. And if I can get seeds or scions of different varieties of Jackfruit and mango, I know some people may prefer that.

_How much do you spend on tropical plants?_ It depends on the rarity of the plant, Louise ... I happily bought a 'Synsepalum dulcificum' for £140 from Canarius. I bought another smaller specimen for £70. This is not including postage. For certain specific plants I would pay 5x that amount. One particular species I would pay silly money for but it's not something available in any store worldwide and would require a trip to S.East Africa + an experienced tour-guide to find in it's natural forest habitat. lol. Good idea that you're canvassing opinion on what is likely to sell here. Grafted Mango and Avocado would probably go quick. Grafted Sapote too. Folk do like named varieties. If I decide to bring hard-to-find plants into Blighty, I'm always prepared to keep them for myself. Even if I have 10 duplicates, I'm often sad to let them go when somebody asks to buy them. lol. Hope you enjoy your trip to Bangladesh. Plant hunting there will be a lot of fun. BTW Your Colocasia and Musa look spectacular. 🤩
@louiseahmedtropicalplantgr50006 күн бұрын
@MoebiusUK thankyou for the feedback it's helpful to know what may be 'popular'. I have seen White and Black Sapote on a few nurserys channels, but not sure if they are a named variety. These are most likely imports from Thailland and Vietnam. There are plenty of named varieties of Mango. Some native to Bangladesh. Thai Katimon is popular, Nam Doc Mai, Miyazaki. King of Brunei, Alphonso, Blackstone, the list goes on. As I mentioned to Brett I will look for actual fruit whilst I'm there and keep the seeds and see if I can get scions and cuttings too.

I hope you manage to source all the plants you are after while on your travels, Louise 🤞 When I first saw the title I thought, I don't think I even want to know what I've spent on all my tropical plants (including all the ones that have perished) lol 😂 As much as I would love another grafted mango, I've not had the best luck with them recently so probably won't risk another one at the moment. I'll probably sprout a few seedlings and see how I get on with them. Also, I'm not sure if you know, but it looks like likes are disabled on your most recent videos.
@louiseahmedtropicalplantgr50006 күн бұрын
I'm not sure how to fix the likes button I've pressed it and seems to work 🤔 No worries Peter it's understandable not getting the same plants if they don't do well for you. The only reason I'm putting the video out now is I'll only be there for a short time. When i upload what's available whilst I'm at the nursery, it's unlikely I can go back another day if I get a request for a particular plant. The logistics of travelling in the capital are pretty dire. So taking orders in advance seems a more logical way of doing it. I may not get a single request which is also fine, just means more room to fit extra plants for me😁

I just bought sugarcane from an Asian greengrocer in Birmingham. I noticed it is covered in a thin layer of clear wax for transportation. I'm going to remove the wax from the sugarcane before planting. I'll cut my cane into five short pieces. If you leave the wax on, the cane will rot, and roots will struggle to grow and reach water. Not sure which type of soil or compost I'll use. I might cut it and rub aloe Vera and tumeric or rooting powder on the fresh cut surfaces. I'll post my results on line.

@15shafique I don't consider it a waste of my time. I'm not sure if you have watched any of my videos, I have been growing tropical plants from seed since 1979. In my previous job I got to visit many homes, and accomodations in Manchester over a 30 year period. One place i visited was a hotel called the Arosa, and i saw in their lobby a 6ft tall mango tree grown from seed, a Pakistani mango. Over the years I have seen a fully mature fruiting orange tree, in a Greek gentleman's home, a sapling he brought back from Greece, a huge fruiting pomegranate in another garden which i did a video of, and many loquats and fruiting banana basjoo types in many gardens near me. I have a fruiting Olive tree in ground, a Tea plant and 3 pomegranates outdoors. Years ago you would not have seen any of the above mentioned trees growing in gardens in the UK, now we see palm trees and and bananas in many gardens!

I was inspired by the pomegranate tree you showed in your old video with lots of mature fruit on it. And then I bought one. It is Provence variety. It flowered and fruited but fruits are small. I am hoping some day its fruits will be large and ripe and I can enjoy them.

A great early years solution to the problem of humidity issues over winter Louise. Root rot is a nightmare, but it seems to me that in most cases, the only solution offered is the use of free draining soils. I have recently lost a 3-year-old Mountain Papaya due to root rot. So, in addition to soil management; I am starting to experiment with solution that I can pour into the growing medium to help prevent root rot, promote healthy root development and help suppress harmful root rot pathogens. Humidity issues is also another killer for Tropical plants. They thrive in high humidity environments, like rainforests so I guess the bathroom creates a temporary oasis for yours seedlings Louise Ahmed.
@louiseahmedtropicalplantgr5000Ай бұрын
@myexoticfoodplants6727 have you tried Trichoderma Michael? I got some a few years ago to add to the substrate. It helps prevent or combat root rot.
