15:36 *DAVID CAY JOHNSTON:* “Then she gets elected Attorney General of California and we had that banking crisis that collapsed our economy 16 years ago and the the bankers say well we'll we'll give $5 billion to the state of California to distribute to people as punishment and she goes no it's going to be $25 billion and she got $25 billion out of them.” For a muckraking, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist on the financial beat (whose work I admire), it would be better if David Cay Johnston had a more nuanced take about the deal that Kamala Harris got from the banks. A post on _Naked Capitalism_ (“How Kamala Harris Sold Out Struggling Homeowners to Save Banks in 2012 and Then Lied About It”) characterized the settlement as a “bank enrichment scheme at the expense of homeowners and the general public.” For one thing, the securitizations of the mortgages had never been properly formed and so the servicers (e.g., Wells Fargo Bank) did not have the right to collect interest and principal from the mortgages. For another, the servicers engaged in creative fraud in engaging in the foreclosures. (And the foreclosures didn’t just hurt the homeowners-they hurt state and local tax revenues by depressing property values in the area.) And, lastly, as that post points out, “The banks didn’t come close to paying $25 billion. The cash portion of the settlement was under $5 billion,” while another post’s headline shows how the deal turned out for the homeowners: “Just 83,000 Homeowners Get First-Lien Principal Reductions from National Mortgage Settlement, 90 Percent Less Than Promised.” The writer of the post says “Let me stress: this is a huge bailout for the banks. The settlement amounts to a transfer from retirement accounts (pension funds, 401 (k)s) and insurers to the banks. And without this subsidy, the biggest banks would be in serious trouble.” As for being regarded as an “excellent manager” there are plenty of accounts of Harris running what can be described only as dysfunctional offices as both Attorney General and Vice-President. One can, of course, take those accounts with a grain of salt but Johnston is remiss in not at least alluding to the fact that not all reports of Harris as a manager have been glowing. I’d really expect better from Johnston.

I’m an exception because I am relatively well informed and you would find you could sit down and talk to me about politics because I am from a childhood family split between a more liberal viewpoint on government compared to the other one-half of siblings who are Fundamentalist Christians who are willing to sacrifice democracy for a theocracy. I don’t hate those two siblings whose votes exed out mine and my liberal sister’s vote for President in 2024 but I know exactly what was lost when their vote deleted mine! No amount of family love will alter my more major concern pertaining to independence, democracy and bodily freedom for each and every American!

The Heritage Foundation is not a consulting firm that wrote Project 2025. It's a far-right "think tank" created at least in part as a result of the strategy laid out in the Powell memo (August 1971).

Fun fact: A couple of years ago there was a 30yr court-imposed gag order lifted where it was finally revealed that in 1986 NSW Police had secretly advised the then State Govt to deny Donald Trump's bid for a casino licence in Sydney, due to their concerns about his links to the Mafia. So, thus Australia dodged that bullet
