:-D tak určitě, tmelem, montážkou, polystyrenem, vatou, dehtem, molitanem, nejlíp všim dohromady a trošku to promíchat s cementem, doporučuje 4/5 českých kutilů nazývajících se stavebníky

I would think a cement chink would be much faster and last longer. Okay I would bet on that and I don't bet unless I know I am going to win. LOL The old fashioned way had to be redone every few years and was a family chore that took some days to complete. This modern stuff sounds good but I would not to take a building made from nice logs (all natural is the point of it) and throw a petroleum product on it. It will dry and crack at some point . Good sales vid though !

What's the point of spacing the logs in that manner? Aesthetics?
@JP-gg2gk

1 Asthetics 2 any bends or cracks in wood may not effect the entire strucre of the building if they are arranged like this, which means not tightly arraged with a gap 3 less usage of log 4 even if the eges of the log blocks are uneven, that will might not be a problem when leaving gapes between logs

They used there hands more than tools in the past i have seen hand and finger prints in the chinking of a cabin that's 175 yrs old. The chinking was done with natural clay and animal hair some time in the 1890's it was covered with lap siding which preserved the chinking. The people that have the cabin now removed the lap siding in the 80's and repaired the chinking that needed it the same way it was done originally and still repair it the same way.

2 parts clay, 1 part sifted wood ashes, 1/2 part salt is the old way of doing. I read that in mother earth news and it will last roughly 50 years. I do this work for a living, and my boss has us use the caulk chinking but we use a brush and water can because our local cabins are put together a bit more roughly and aren't as square. I absolutely hate applying it although I'm fairly good at it now. I don't like the look of it, but I would prefer the woodtone colors if I had to use caulk.

I hate to be the armchair expert, but I think the solution is to take that house apart and trim nearly a quarter of that gap distance off every joint so the joints can just have a bit of fiber (oakum, traditionally) shoved between them. I'm even okay with putting a little bead on the outside after the real fix.

mortar has been used in the past, as well as rope, wool, cotton, polyester, tar, asphalt. but to caulk an entire cabin your talking hundreds of dollars, not including the man hours to accomplish all of that. I could see a single bead worked in, but a 2inch gap wtf? that becomes a waste of money and time. I'm curious on the costs of the materials alone to do an entire cabin roughly 12-1500 Sq. ft.
@silversurfer233
@silversurfer233 7 жыл бұрын
Brutalford Most traditional gap fill is moss. The caulking that this dude is doing is almost too painful to watch. Log buildings take up too much timber and time in my opinion, there are better ways of building this type of structure.

dozdeshabb But a recipe for allergic reactions for anyone, non-allergic at present, mildly allergic or who passed through their allergic phase in puberty (relapsing) Interesting note : there are 2 types of allergic people, those born allergic whose allergic phase ends with puberty and those who develop allergies for life (the gift that keeps on giving) after passing through puberty. When I was about 6 I develop allergies to about 16 different allergens. In those days (ie.the early '60s) they didn't have mixed allergens so weekly I received 16 separate injections using old style stainless steel syringes, starting at the top of my upper arm and working the injections down to my elbow. Very memorable. I still have to carry a rescue inhaler (albuterol) should I be in close and closed quarters with smokers, dusty air and the kind of material you suggest as natural chinking. As a feel good chinking (oh I'm using all natural earth friendly resources!) that's great but think down the road if it is a cabin that can last 100 years. Patients with allergies have only been rising over the last 40 years. Think of future inhabitants who might want to rent or buy the cabin. Stick to natural cement based chinking. More practical and just as natural as goat/yak/Bigfoot hair. Just FYI.

@@danielfronc4304 Your comment is interesting and we must be understanding to people dealing with severe allergies, but as you yourself say, allergies seem to be largely a consequence of our modern way of life and too much hygiene impeding our immune system from developing normally. As regards log cabins, we must understand too that anybody buinding such a shack may want to use only natural untransformed materials that we may get directly from the land. Vegetal fibers alone should not normally be too allergenic, although some farmers develop over time some sensibility to hay dust, but this generally happens after years of exposure to highly dusty barn atmosphere containing not only hay dust, but as well manure and urine from domestic and wild animals, as well as residues from chemical pesticides and other toxic products used in farm management.
