That's very excellent! Speaking of that, I also created red by mixing both magenta and yellow together. Plus, I also created blue by mixing cyan and magenta together. I know that you're aware of this, but did you know that blue is also a secondary color especially when you're mixing cyan and magenta together?! 😕

Nice video. I've been eyeing those Liquidtex markers for a while. Do they dry more matte or more glossy than the Posca?

I just compared them, they're almost the same. I think the Liquitex have a slightly more satin finish than the Posca markers.

Can we mix warm purple[boysenberry] and white to make cooler shades of pink

I'm not sure which shade of purple boysenberry is, but if you add white to purple it will most likely result in a light purple.

Nice demo! A few thoughts: I've had people say they can just buy purple paint, but you still need magenta to adjust the hue when you need a pinky-purple. . . assuming you want control over saturation _and_ hue when you paint. And by the way, Golden's Alizarin Crimson Hue actually contains green pigment. That would make it a better match to the original Alizarin Crimson, but it makes it worse for mixing purples. All those reds have their roles. It's just that mixing purple isn't always one of them
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 4 күн бұрын
Thanks! I agree. My video about mixing pink includes a slide that lists the different pigments that each brand of Alizarin Crimson contains. I figure I can just use Quinacridone Magenta, that way I can mix vivid purple from it and then I can add Phthalo Green if I want to mix a color that's similar to Alizarin. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnm0foeQhd2aoposi=6lBagDVJED7IZx9M&t=776

Does the paint seep under the stencil at all?
@ozmobozo
@ozmobozo 8 күн бұрын
Well if it was painters tape I'm sure it would but this is some sort of a plastic peel so as we see here it doesn't.
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 8 күн бұрын
It depends upon how smooth the surface is and how fluid the paint is. One trick is to give it a coat of clear gloss medium first so that it seals the edges of the stencil. If the gloss medium seeps under the stencil it won't matter much because it's clear.

Thank you for the demonstration. I do have a question, sometimes I match a color perfectly but acrylics dry darker, which adds some complexity to the color matching process. How do I tackle that?
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 10 күн бұрын
You're welcome! You can compensate for that by mixing the color slightly lighter, dry it and then compare it. If it's still too dark you have to add more white. I have a quick demo in the link below. If you're trying to mix more of a color that's on your palette, save some of the color and keep it wet. If you match wet paint to wet paint they both will shift the same as they dry. kzbin.infofkzdYySz2vc

@@ChrisBreier thank you for the fast response. I've been looking for solutions since I posted my comment. A fellow on KZbin ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2bKq32rjZ14e7csi=UpREnhzrtnb4HHD7 ) suggests wetting the color you want to match, lightening it, and then match to that. What do you think?
@chrish4079
@chrish4079 11 күн бұрын
Yeah, people who think that CMY advocates want them to use only three colors are missing the point. You'll likely never even need those bright purples and greens depending on your subject matter. (Limited palette, anyone?) But it pays to understand the CMY system in order to be properly oriented when mixing colors. It helps with Identifying complements. It helps with knowing what to do in the rare case that you do need a bright turquoise or a Barbie pink. And above all, it helps with avoiding crazy theories like the split primary palette (only half kidding). My advice for those who don't get the theory is just to keep PR122 and PB15:3 around for when they're needed and then carry on as usual with all the colors you're used to
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 10 күн бұрын
I was taught the split primary color theory in school. The more I used it, the less it made sense. It seemed like the only color that really needed a warm and cool version was red. I worked in printing for years. I would read art books that state that you can't mix red, and then I'd go into work and see red being made by printing magenta over yellow....so that's what made me realize that magenta is a primary color and not red.
@chrish4079
@chrish4079 9 күн бұрын
@@ChrisBreier Amen to that. I've never painted much, but experimented a lot with mixing color after becoming interested at university, where I was a chemistry major but took art classes as electives. A friend who did color photography in his home darkroom helped me get my ideas straight about RGB and CMY. Until then I was sitting in painting class with my split-primaries trying in vain to mix a bright fuchsia. That was 1980 or so. Such a shame that the party line in the art world has led so many astray. But light is beginning to dawn! My videos are very old and amateurish compared to yours, but I like to think that I helped start the ball rolling in the right direction. :)

For various reasons I gave up on my stay wet palettes. So here's a method I use these days when using my usual heavy body acrylics - Take sealable box and line it with a sheet of tear-off palette paper. Don't add water to anything and paint as normal. When going to lunch, or overnight, then MIST only the lid and thin mixes on the palette. Close lid and you're done, the humidity in the container will keep everything workable, with no thinned/running paint later on. Btw for small work, the upside down lids of Carte d'Or ice cream containers works well and clean up well. Like before, when taking a break, just mist inside the container and upturn it onto the 'palette' lid and close.
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 12 күн бұрын
Yep, misting the lid is a good trick! Thanks for adding it to the comments. It doesn't water down the paints and it increases the humidity. I mist the lid of the larger Masterson palette when I use it for open acrylics. Another trick to increase the humidity is to place a small wet sponge inside, off to the side.

The main reason I use canvas is because it's more convenient than board for me anyway. I paint round the edges and hang it straight on the wall unframed. I really don't like the weave of canvas so the first thing I had to learn was how to get a paper smooth surface with gesso which is easy if you use a plastic scraper. Mostly i paint on paper by the way. Acrylic on paper in a "watercolour" style!
