Which one , the C500K reverse logarithmic 'C' potentiometer is ? Thanks 👍🏼

Apply a light flame (Bic lighter) to the end of the nylon string after cutting. This will seal the string and keep it from fraying.

I have the same 1960 tribute plus and tried to find the Gotoh 1511 bridge you mentioned but it's nowhere to be found ? Did you misspeak the number 1511 ? Update ..... found it at Stew Mac , but not sure to buy the chrome or nickel ?
@johnplanetz17 күн бұрын
I bought the 1511-N bridge and 5740-N stop tailpiece at stewmac - both in nickel. This was way back in 2012 but looks like they're still available.

@@johnplanetz ... I has two Epiphones with the wire on the bridge but they don't buzz or give me any problem. So I'll keep them stock until I have a problem, I guess.

One tip to make it go faster: Use a ball-end allen wrench. Then you do not have to loosen the string each time you need to move the saddle because you can go into the screw at an angle. Other tips I used: 1. First install the two E strings, tune to pitch, Adjust for the approximate action height you want, and adjust the bridge post allen screws to center the posts and tighten those screws snug. Then set the intonation for the two E strings. This gives you a good starting point. You can push the saddle forward and backward using the eraser of a pencil even when the string in under full tension. This makes the job easier and faster. Thanks for posting the video (12 years ago!). It inspired me to install my Wilkinson bridge that had been sitting in the closet for months. By the way, on an archtop guitar any screws that get dropped inevitably end up falling into the F holes. Don't ask. LoL.

Videos like these are very dangerous. After watching videos like these people might think they can fix their guitars on their own. In reality the majority cannot and will ruin their guitars. If you want to be safe take your guitar to a skilled luthier.

Alnico 5 are too trebly in the highs. I even prefer the Ceramic 8 over the A5. Alnico 2 are more smooth and soft. Yes, please.

Unfortunately your experiment is not good, because you play the guitar slightly differently every time. And I could not hear any difference based on the cap value. Of course, when you wind the pot down, the tone changes.

Would anyone recommend linear for tone and audio for volume?

I have 2 Donner DJP1000 Jazz guitars and the Pots on the Tone are poor. They basically kick in about no 2 then no audible difference. Cheap pots I'm guessing linear . So I've ordered 2x CTS 500K vintage Audio taper and 2 x CTS Linear 500k I was going to try a set of each in the guitars. Now seeing your video I can say it has to be Audio taper so the other 2 linear I will return.I've been trying to research what I need . Your Video is brilliant and the demo explains everything. Thank you.

Since you'll have both sets on hand, I suggest trying them both in your guitar before returning. Use alligator leads, so they're easy to swap in and out without soldering. Then you'll know exactly what you're choosing and why!

Doesn't this change when you have a tone circuit? And what about when you install a treble bleed, too? AFAIK tone circuit always needs a log taper pot, but when you have tone and volume installed, the volume can be linear, especially with a treble bleed installed.

Thanks a lot for this video! Helped me a lot! I've got one question though: I've got a custom strat, with P94 and Humbucker. 2 vol 1 tone. Used 500k audio pots for volume, and noticed that the P94 on the neck disappears almost completely when turning down volume between 5 or 6. Should I use 250k for the P94? Btw, this video helped me decide to replace my disgusting linear tone pot, it's response drives me nuts

Not sure! I recommend experimenting using alligator leads to swap in and out components/values to find a combination that works for you, before soldering it all back together

THANK YOU, Get straight to the point with sound examples. BRAVO!!! (I don't want to watch a 20 minute video about how pots work. I need to remember with sound examples) I'm building my 5th guitar from scratch, and I still can't remember my linear pots for volume, audio taper for tones. haha, My brain just doesn't want to remember. A+numbers usually audio/logarithmic, and B+numbers usually the linear potentiometers. 250k's for single coil pickups[which are naturally more bright], 500k for humbuckers pickups or merged-coils setups[which are naturally more dulled down on brightness]. I'll be back in another 3 years when I build another and forget all this information once again.

I tried this on my #1 guitar (1980s Strat) that needs a new 3rd fret. It worked! It took me a longer than 15 minutes (more like 45) as I had to go back and re-file and polish the fret several times, but I’m super happy with the result!

Hi john, i come many years later, but, if your still into that , i advise you to try to build a gibson type varitone.Struggling to make mine, I can tell you 2 thing 1 housing the inductor and switch in a metal casing is crucial , otherwise it hums loudly. 2 its important to get a inductive coil of 7 henries up to 15 henries, it could be the primary or the secondary of a small transformer.The varitone in conjunction with the tone pot create some king of resonance the lower you go on the dial.
