Foster and Dean came from an era where you had to really work your craft. There wasn't any of the social platforms or quick routes to fame. The talent was nourished over time and it shows here.

Mel Brooks pays homage to all the greats before him and to Vaudeville, the birth of modern comedy. I've seen Blazing Saddles dozens of times since the early '80's when they released it on VHS, but not until recently did I become aware from some youtube video of his reference/homage to Laurel and Hardy when the Mayor says "I offer this laurel and hearty hand shake". All these years, it never occurred to me, lol. There are many jokes we miss the first time, and even the 100th time.

Can't believe this is the Jerry Lewis in The King of Comedy. He had really aged here, and passed away a year later.

In 1961, as High School students, living near NYC, we were fans of Laurel and Hardy. One the friends Father had a home business TV Time, and recorded tape and made records of TV shows. We went in December 1961 to NYC, as guests of the TV show at Channel 11, WPIX, to briefly appear and had a photo taken of us with Chuck McCann who emceed the show. I also in 1961, wrote a letter to Stan Laurel cat his apt, Oceana Apartments in Santa Monica, with his reply letter and some Laurel and Hardy Memorabilia too Now being 80 and a 100% Disabled Veteran of over 50 years ago, videos like this bring back memories of those days in my life. 😊

Dean was very lucky to have worked with one of his biggest idols. Dean was also very clever; I've always noticed that whenever he would sing, he made sure that he was usually sitting down somehow like in this rocking chair, on the edge of the grand piano 🎹, or the 🛋️ or that black tall director's chair in the studio. Perhaps because it allowed him to sing much smoother without having to bounce around. This is also the very first time that I see him on the right hand side of the screen cuz he would always insist on being on the left hand side of the screen.

Until the laughs disappear, which happened with Stan and Jerry - they were left way behind and couldn't adapt. I think Jerry could have been a good serious actor, especially after seeing him in the movie, King's of Comedy. But that's the way it goes.

Here in the UK, we had a comedy double act called Morecambe and Wise. They came close to being as good as L and H, but acknowledged that they never could be as good...they themselves, held L and H in great esteem. One sketch called for the two men to being sharing an apartment and sharing a bed...no innuendo..both were straight...in real life and in the show...but Eric Morecambe was uncomfortable with this and brought it up with their writer, Eddie Braben. Eddie said "well it worked for Laurel and Hardy". Eric then said, "yes..I agree that's absolutely right" and so the sketch often featured them sharing a bed.
