What a brilliant talk. Younger audiences aren’t familiar with post-WW2 politics + so I appreciate Anne providing historical + geopolitical context to thread together her argument. Great clarification at the end that this argument is more about autocratic movements/ ideas rather than countries. The author is a wonderfully eloquent orator - she even weaved in many new ideas which I did not know of (e.g. Russia’s interest in the Arctic). Though at times, it was frustrating to see this important argument presented through a Western lens, which discounts that democratic governments have enabled + propped up autocracies where it served their needs. It’s crucial to recognise where democracy + autocracy interlope, and the role democratic governments played in facilitating autocracies. In fairness, the author did acknowledge this in the Q&A + I imagine time also limited her argument. I commend the author for recognising + crediting the individuals living under autocracies who helped her write her book. Thank you Anne for an extremely engaging and informative talk. Superb speaker.

My manifesto: 1- production and living standards/wages need to be chained together so one is never to far from the other, how? Idk, but maybe a percentage set by law? 2-steak everything to the ground! If the economy is global don't expect them to care about a country, they have hundreads of does. They dont care because they have no interaction with their customers beyond money. Is treason at national and international levels. 3-idk, i really dont have that much to say

Democracy is when those who make decisions on your behalf have the duty to ask for your consent first. Today's republics are actually modern oligarchies where the interest groups of the rich are arbitrated by the people, that is, you can choose from which table of the rich you will receive crumbs. The "fatigue" of democracy occurs when there is a big difference between the interests of the elected and the voters, thus people lose confidence in the way society functions. As a result, poor and desperate citizens will vote with whoever promises them a lifeline, i.e. populists or demagogues. The democratic aspect is a collateral effect in societies where the economy has a strong competitive aspect, that is, the interests of those who hold the economic power in society are divergent. Thus those whealty, and implicitly with political power in society, supervise each other so that none of them have undeserved advantages due to politics. For this reason, countries where mineral resources have an important weight in GDP are not democratic (Russia, Venezuela, etc.), because a small group of people can exploit these resources in their own interest. In poor countries (Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, etc.) the main exploited resource may even be the state budget, as they have convergent interests in benefiting, in their own interest, from this resource. It is easy to see if it is an oligarchy because in a true democracy laws would not be passed that would not be in the interest of the many. The first modern oligarchy appeared in England at the end of the 17th century. After the bourgeois revolution led by Cromwell succeeded, the interest groups of the rich were unable to agree on how to divide their political power in order not to reach the dictatorship of one. The solution was to appoint a king to be the arbiter. In republics, the people are the arbiter, but let's not confuse the possibility of choosing which group will govern you with democracy, that is, with the possibility of citizens deciding which laws to pass and which not to. The solution is modern direct democracy in which every citizen can vote, whenever he wants, over the head of the parliamentarian who represents him. He can even dismiss him if the majority of his voters consider that he does not correctly represent their interests. It's like when you have to build a house and you choose the site manager and the architect, but they don't have the duty to consult with you. The house will certainly not look the way you want it, but the way they want it, and it is more certain that you will be left with the money given and without the house. It is strange that outside of the political sphere, nowhere, in any economic or sports activity, will you find someone elected to a leadership position and who has failure after failure and is fired only after 4 years. We, the voters, must be consulted about the decisions and if they have negative effects we can dismiss them at any time, let's not wait for the soroco to be fulfilled, because we pay, not them. In any company, the management team comes up with a plan approved by the shareholders. Any change in this plan must be re-approved by the shareholders and it is normal because the shareholders pay.

The first ten minutes sounds like a mommy state arguement. I strongly disagree about governments being there to protect us and the proof is in the pudding to what mess we're in now and that bureaucracies and centralized controls are a mess. It's not technology. Please allow the technology to be available more to all and keep it in the light of day and we will be better off as a society.

Currently, society or the population is in great, gross denial. the evidence in my comments that mention the decline or collapse or fall of western civilization, or the elites are the cause in other videos. my comments never get likes. but the video creators stick them as highlighted comments.

I think my life would have been very different had it not been for Jean Plaidy. I was about nine when I discovered Elizabeth ? (I have just tried to identify which book it was -- cover picture showed a very haggard young lady who had just been released from the Tower) and that was the beginning of a lifelong passion for history. In that same shop, I found one of the old Classic Comics - Joan of Arc. I am 69 and they are still my heroines. And I don't want to leave out Agatha Christie, whom I started reading when I was about eleven and still thoroughly enjoy taking out the occasional AC from the library.

Martin Wolf wrote a brilliant book. He explains the rise of populism very carefully by tracing its causes to the financial crisis of 2007 to 2008. It is a great read, a must read for anyone who wishes to understand the rise of Trump and similar leaders.

Why are people apathetic to politics well when Labour are about to win an election with the ex head of the CPS , who is obviously aware of these issues and hasn’t stipulated any intent to improve our system in the manifesto or just verbally against corruption then what hope is there. You have to stop thinking like a lawyer and negate the current system to deliver a system that works, If any government was ever genuinely wanting to protect the UK people and businesses from corruption it could do so quite easily, 1/ open a new court of corruption, give it wide ranging powers of fines and imprisonment and forfeiture of financial gain, then in the new court legislation you stipulate any lawyer uncovering or gains knowledge of their clients corruption must offer that information to the prosecution or be disbarred for life, or deny acting for the client, if their client doesn’t plead guilty and is found guilty then the lawyers open themselves up to being potentially disbarred, this then means all lawyers are reluctant to plead not guilty and it all becomes a far faster process, any corruption by their clients is then admitted or those unlawful lawyers gradually disbarred thus leaving the profession far cleaner and it deters corruption from being conducted in the UK. to a defence which was never thought of Within the new legislation the prosecutors dictate the amount of time needed in a hearing for the prosecutions case and make it so the defence has only equal time to argue their defence case. 2/ Similarly for slapp you make a court of suit against defamation that have a time limit of 30min 15, per side, this shuts down cost and prevents huge lawyer fees, you also set a charge for any 3rd or more cases being brought by one party so they pay the court a £300k un refundable unless there income or wealth doesn’t exceed 300k , it means those that bring multiple unwanted cases are no longer clogging the system, and if so we’re generating huge sums. Within a few lines i bet these proposals would clean up many cases and deter corruption from being carried out in the UK.
