I love it! I have a whelen justice towmans bar but i miss the functionality that I had with my old liberty, (low power, cruise, TA, looking into either using an external flasher instead like this or finding a wecan board to replace it with, depending if that would work I've been doing some research and I'm not sure! I like a challenge and think the external flasher would work with some time put in. They have a larger one now which would allow me to have a position for all the modules, but like everything else it's getting expensive!

You’d step out of your patrol car, and could hear the dual rotators, until the contact pulled into traffic then you’d push the button back in. I retire in 7 months with 37 years, I started in 83, graduated the academy in 84, and was issued a 1978 LTD sedan Police interceptor with red & blue grill & rear deck light w/head lamp wigwag & 200 watt dual tone Federal Signal & a 6” post Unity spot light steady burning red. The engine was a 460cid Police interceptor with dual exhaust, and could do 167mph , but the unit with the overheads could only do 139mph. Our traffic enforcement clocked both cars when we got them.

How did you wire the Motorola Wildcard?
@rwo9783 жыл бұрын
Followed the directions? The power supply gets main power thru pos/neg hookup. And turn on is low current, which is the type of switch box the wildcard is.

Beautiful old style xenon gas tube strobes. Modern day LED strobes are completely silent but these old xenon strobes had a unique sound to them and you KNEW when they were on even if you couldn't see them! The first Whelen bars we had were those old 8000 series lightbars and they made a very unique "whooping" sound as they went through their charge/discharge cycle.

Kody McPheron. Power/12 volt positive to the red wire. Ground to somewhere on the base. The black wire here is the ground and is just attached to the base to ease in wiring to a power supply.

Hello. I'm looking at doing this job as well on some Whelen 500 series swapping out blue LEDs for white. I found the white beads/chips on ebay but they're specs say they operate between 3.2-3.4v. Are these the same chips you used? Will they work directly on the Whelen boards without further electronics or did you have to add an LED driver since the voltage is different. I know automotive is 12v and LEDs have a wide working range but just wanna make sure. Thanks for your help.
@rwo9786 жыл бұрын
JRG, the chips are drop in. The driver is built onto the board.
@jrg68096 жыл бұрын
rwo978 Awesome! Thanks for clarifying that for me. Many people aren't familiar with the compatibility of the ebay LED chips when installed on these whelen boards so hadn't received any feedback about doing this mod. I will be using the cool white color which i believe is rated at 6-6.5k and operate at 3.7v according to their specs.

Not very bright except the clear rotating lights.
@znovosad5556 жыл бұрын
Cam Smith it's because it's strobe. Not LED. The strobes aren't picked up very well on camera.
@ComputerLearning06 жыл бұрын
The video doesn't do it justice. I've seen StrobeHawk's in person and they are VERY bright. Federal Signal doesn't build anything sub-par.
@tommatthews91266 жыл бұрын
The reason cameras don't show the true brightness of these old strobe bars is because they use the old Xenon gas filled tubes and their flash has a much faster decay compared to LED strobes, which decay less quickly. By decay I mean the amount of time the light disappears after it fires. The shutter speed on most cameras are too fast to effectively capture xenon strobes firing. Xenon strobe tubes also required very high voltage to fire, whereas LED strobes require almost NO voltage to operate. Night and day difference between these two types of strobe systems. Xenon strobes were a good technology for it's time but fall very short when compared to LED's. Indeed, Federal Signal were masters at making high quality xenon strobe systems back in the day. They didn't make anything that didn't have high visibility.

Very nice lightbar. Depending on the motors, it is not necessarily a good idea to reverse the standard direction of rotation that the motor was set to. I have been told by Federal Signal representatives that this is likely to decrease the life of the motor, regardless if it seems to function properly right now in the moment. Don't ask me why, but this is just what I have been told.
