That trail looks fun as hell but with a name like "poison spider", there's no goddamn way I'm going anywhere near it

In that situation going down hill towards an area that could have flooded or flash flooded not very smart. You were safer up on top.

Unbelievable how people don't really know what they R Doin . My son and I were in a flash flood that killed the sheriff's deputy his car was taken into the Snake River off from highway 78 he drowned. My son and I were up Reynolds Creek road and we watched as a little trickle of water going through a drainage that was used to race through the sand . Within 8 minutes it turned into a 5 ft wide 4 ft deep channel and within another 4 minutes after that it washed out the road we happened to be on the right side of the road to get out. It wasn't by chance that I was on the right side of the road we filmed the highway just washed away in a switchback corner.

Why not stay up on the mountain? I don’t think driving down into a canyon is a very good idea.

I’m so stunned at just how quickly the rain eroded the trail and how quickly the trail became filled with water.

The fact you choose the most difficult/risky approach to the first obstacle says everything one needs to know about your mindset.

Utah OHV Trail Host here. One thing that I always tell other riders is to go prepared with wet weather gear and survival gear (food, tarp, light source, fire source, medical kit, etc.) as the weather can turn on you quickly. Especially in the summertime when monsoon season arrives. Riding in hail / hard rain is painful. If you have the ability to shelter somewhere along the trail and wait it out, do it. Let things settle down before you venture back onto the trails. Glad you didn't actually get met with a flash flood on the trail as stated in your title here. That would have ended much, much differently than you making it safely back to the trailhead as you guys were able to.

We used to do stupid stuff like that too. The fire lines in the canyons in Colorado look the same. We thought we were immortal.

2 Years ago I led another trip to Utah. We got caught way up on Poison Spider Mesa in Jeeps. The trail above “the waterfall” was a raging river. We sat and waited for it to pass and for the first time, “the waterfall” was a waterfall. I have som great video of our trip out. I was very concerned that the switchbacks would have been washed away , but the storm only slightly affected that area,

My husband was hit in the forehead by a baseball size hail. It started pea sized. He was trying to put a very heavy blanket to cover the windshield. He got one side secured and was working on the other size when the large hail came. One hit the windshield frame and bounce off the frame and hit him. His forehead was bleeding really bad. I took him to ER. He had a small crack in his skull plus had to have two stitches on the inside and three stitches on the outside. Now we just leave the van alone while it’s hailing. He don’t let husband outside either when there is hail.
