Too bad you couldn't have taken the older pre-1938 alignment of US 60/70 (Jack Rabbit Trail.). It would have been more interesting than the post-1938 alignment. Maybe another time?
@ramblinman4197Ай бұрын
Overall, I do think it would have been more interesting. If I am ever back in that area, I hope to check it out, and also to be able to drive the old alignment through Box Canyon. When I planned the 2023 trip, I never guessed that they'd have a hurricane come through there right before I did!

12:05 I wonder if Old Freeburg Rd. was an older alignment of US 460?
@ramblinman41974 ай бұрын
@@r66fplaysgames there are a lot of old road alignments between East St Louis and Freeburg, but most of them predate US 460 being extended into the area. Through Belleville seemed to be the only exception. By 1946 when US 460 was extended into the area, New Missouri Avenue had already been built & 4-laned, and the new 2-lane between Belleville & Freeburg was in place.

CR 496 from East of Greenville, MI, all the way to Snowville, MI, does strongly appear to be Old US 41, as does CKC from Snowville, MI, to the current US 41. CKL is also very much likely Old US 41. Also, it looks like there was an even earlier, possibly pre-US 41, auto trail alignment that went from Snowville, MI, up to Diorite, MI, & back down to Clarksburg, MI, following mostly CR 496 & a "road" that Google Earth labels as CKH, which appears to be a dirt path\long abandoned road. There appears to be yet another stretch between Humboldt, MI, to Southeast of Champion, MI, that was also realigned, as well, that follows FNP, CR 601 & FNO. Google StreetView does have most of these stretches of Old US 41 covered, in this area, except for the CKC, CKH & FNP, as well as bits & pieces of the CR 601 & FNO alignments.

From what I've seen, on Historic Aerials, it appears that Old US 41 turned East off of Bay de Noc Rd onto Evergreen Rd & rejoined the current alignment of US 41 where Evergreen Rd intersects with it. Historic Aerials has a 1954 aerial map of that area that shows there being a sweeping curve in the Northeast corner of that intersection & Google Maps does show remnants of a curve that used to be there as well. Historic Aerials also shows that another curve, just North of there, was slightly realigned to the West just a little bit as well.

I have seen that site and have visited it many times. His information is very good, but is sparse when it comes to the old alignment from Escanaba southward. He also has a Wisconsin highways website with extensive information on US 41 through that state.

11:25 An old 1930 plat map of Fond Du Lac county that has detailed township maps, including that of Friendship township where Van Dyne, WI is located in the county, that I found on Historic Map Works, shows that Viaduct Rd. was the original road heading South out of Van Dyne, WI, however the map doesn't show it as being labeled as US 41 (It's been my experience that these plat maps, which were published by the W. W. Hixson & Co., were very hit & miss with labeling highways.) This means that the Viaduct Rd alignment was bypassed between 1930-37.
@r66fplaysgames Жыл бұрын
It looks like the dead end road, on the left at 12:14 with the camper on it, was an older alignment of US 41 or its predecessor. There is a short road on the South side of the creek, called Topel Rd. that seems to confirm this. Highway SS & Drolette Rd. seems to be part of this alignment as well.
@ramblinman4197 Жыл бұрын
I am fairly certain you are correct about the dead end. I could not find any map evidence to prove for sure whether that alignment was ever a part of US 41 or just a predecessor, but I am pretty sure that all or part of that was the earlier alignment into town from the North.

I seem to remember reading somewhere, years ago, that I-55 was once planned to be extended from its current terminus, in Chicago, IL, North to Milwaukee, WI. Due to opposition this idea was canceled. The only remnants of this plan seem to be a short freeway stretch of Lake Shore Drive North of I-55 & another stretch, in Milwaukee, WI, that was built & got the I-794 designation. Once again, I don't remember where I read this & will have to see if I can find that information again.
