This is arguably the the best version of Matilda by Chet and Tommy, even better than their album cut. Their harmony is enough to bring tears to your eyes.

I don't think they ever have played a more beautiful duet (before or since)?. What is the name of the second tune, 'Heavenly'?

What is the song they played after jingle bells, or is it a bridge they wrote for jingle bells?

Some nice torch passing here. Chet was almost gone. Just noticed for the first time that young Tommy reminds me of young Tim Robbins.

Thanks for this post. Never saw Chet play an acoustic guitar before. Aparently his favorite guitar to play at home was a Ramiriz classical...but what you usually see him playing in videos is something like a Gretsch. He's about 73 in this video, and he did live thru the turning of the millenium, but died June 30, 2001, 10 days after his 77th b'day. Someone needs to write a full bio of Chet. Apparently, "dirt poor" hardly describes how truly poor he was as a child.

Tommy deferred to Chet. He watched Chets chords and that's where he stayed. He still loves Chet in 2024.

Technically on the money. But don, you gotta let go. It's not a Christian church song or a funeral dirhe. Listen to Michael play this livr. It's on KZbin. It seems like you never experienced it live.

My parents (born in the 1930s) wanted me to play like this after one year of lessons and self teaching. I used to look at them and laugh. Oh, yeah, I'm on it! Any day now! I was thirteen. I still have difficulty executing parts of this 30 years later. Gotta love it.

Greatest studio & stage musicians were Motown & always Country. Country artists best strings. Best all-around Classical & Jazz because it's REAL music composition, instrumentation. Actually requires talent, study, practice! Not the untalented, unmerited, trash who pass as talent these past decades. Affirmative Action talent ain't talent. Also, some excellent musicians in rock bands of 70s, 80s, because they, too, practiced endlessly played live. Can fool the fans not the players!

Unbelievable! When I was 25 my neighbor loaned me her nylon string. I accidentally hit it on a chair and put a dent in it. My GF at the time said she new a bloke in the mornington peninsula. I was totally dubious. We went there and in his workshop were posters of Clapton and Emmanuel, signed "Thanks". Its amazing the world of guitars. Two of my heroes here. I never knew they played together!

When I was about 6 yrs old, my Uncles had Chet Atkins does the Beatles. Would spend hours listening to this album and then listening to my Uncle playing Art and Garfunkel. My Grandfather and his brothers would play together. Brings lots of wonderful memories.

Mr Chet Atkinson was my inspiration to Lear the guitar when I was about 12. Much later came Tommy and @ akannecortich8197 8yrs. ago stated, “both terribly humble people “ is very true. At 78 today, I don’t claim to be anything like my guitar heroes but I still play the guitar and record at home. So RIP my’Guru’ Chet 🙏and keep going Tommy Emmanuel as you are like no other 🎸👏

Atkins was an iconic performer yet his greatest legacy was changing the way the guitar as an instrument can be played. The "greatest" guitarists in country and rock music all point to Chet Atkins as the master.

Tommy Emmanuel is a narcissist. He thinks he is better than Chet. I saw a video once where he wanted to correct Chet. He said his tuning was bad. Arrogance. Don't like him since. Chet you are thebest. And you are an example in modesty.

About 5 years ago at Tommy's concert here in Christchurch, New Zealand, I was sitting in the front row and after one of Tommy's lightning fast songs, I called out "Tommy, you're going to have to slow down - I CAN'T HEAR THAT FAST!!" Tommy, and the whole audience laughed like hell!! I don't think I've ever heard any other guitarist with his speed, dexterity and accuracy!

Tommy, one of the very few Chet Atkins “ Certified Guitarists” , is a once in a life time talent and a man whose humble and appreciative nature has endeared him to millions of listeners and earned the respect of the world’s finest guitarists, the great Chet Atkins perhaps chief among them!

Tommy has certain moments that are just indescribable, mastery atop mastery. Chet was definitely not as fast or technically impressive, but every moment he played was mastery atop mastery.

Chet Atkins was a better stand up comic sitting down than most stand up comics. Side act for a singularly legendary, musician guitarist and really, above all, gentleman.

So astounding that an electric guitar can be played mechanistically, using intermediate classical guitar technique.
