You are very hardworking and you are getting some very nice results on boats, but you absolutely can buff away oxidation. There is a guy over in Washington State who has compounded literally hundreds and hundreds of boats without wet sanding. And the results last for years. If you are curious how he does it, check out “local boydidgood”.

Loving the videos and info! Just came into a 42' Post. What grit do you recommend for a newby to start with? TIA!
@zippymarinerestorations
@zippymarinerestorations 29 күн бұрын
Thanks!! I would start with 1000 grit, then finish off with 2k. If you want extreme gloss, hit it with 3000 (higher grits don’t take long, it just gets out the other deeper grits)

Sanding is an absolute must for heavy oxidation. Yesterday, I was working on my 36 yr old boat hull I had this exact problem after using 3m heavy cut compound. I started out sanding, then got lazy and just started compounding only on another section, which looked great. I washed the entire side of the hull with Dawn to wash off the polish and see if the shine stuck. It was no surprise that the area I sanded and compounded still looked perfect, but the area with just compound looked almost like it did before I started! There are soo many videos saying sanding is "old school", but don't wash the compound off to show you the hidden truth...
@zippymarinerestorations
@zippymarinerestorations Ай бұрын
You’re absolutely correct. Unfortunately all of those videos are out (which is false info) to get people to click on it and watch, just because it’s the “easy & fast way” without sanding. So of course people would want the easy way of doing something, who doesn’t? But with restoring gel coat, there isn’t an easy way. Just sand it & it’ll look amazing, and won’t bleed back. :)

Why elevate for white gelcoat as opposed to this?
@zippymarinerestorations
@zippymarinerestorations Ай бұрын
Elevate or Finish R can be used on white gel coat. That video, was my first time trying finish R since it came out recently. Finish R works well on any colored gel coat, best on dark color. Elevate can be used on any color gel coat as well. Elevate likes more heat since it is thin.

And this is why I have an old 1966 16ft. starcraft aluminum boat with a new 25hp yamaha. Zero maintenance on the boat, I just hose it down after every use, flush the motor and I'm done. This boat is 58 yrs old and I've had it for over 20yrs. Just bought the new motor last year. Boat has no leaks and it gets the job done. Aint nobody got time for all that buffing.😅

Sanding is the most important part when working with oxidation. Removing the dead layer. Sanding up to 3000 grit helps the finish of the coating giving the super glossy wet look when done along with marine sealant.
@zippymarinerestorations
@zippymarinerestorations Ай бұрын
1000%%%% correct. That’s the #1 key factor- wetsanding. Some folks act like you gotta take 80grit to the gel coat. Haha.

I appreciate your trying to keep people from being ripped off by people who don't do the job the right way. But, what I would suggest is that, after you show us how ineffective the "cheap" way of doing the job is, you show us how YOU do it and explain why the way you do the job is better, and show the results. That's what is going to bring business to you. That is what is going to build value in your methods. I know you plan to show your method in another video - but, both methods really should be in the same video. Some people are going to want to do the job themselves; so, showing how you do the job is going to be very helpful. Thanks, for the video!
@zippymarinerestorations
@zippymarinerestorations Ай бұрын
Agreed. I do have more videos that are posted showing the correct way. We’re booked out as well (always a great thing). More videos are coming, but a video like this always grabs more people’s attention because people want the “easy” way of doing a job & not the effective hard way. Another vid is coming on this same boat. Thanks again!

One time. Why would you waste a bunch of compound, no matter the brand, for it to come back? You don’t have to watch my videos. My videos are to help others, I don’t care what brand you use. I’ve heard it from far too many customer that they “paid someone else to do it” and it came back a week or so later. This is the way that I do it. Take it or leave it, totally up to you! 😜
