I honestly don’t believe the painting is really that good. I just think they like it and so they are trying to find and attach all kinds of meaning and symbolism to something that may not really be there.

Thank you for this in depth look at technique. It is incredibly useful and seeing how long it takes in real time is a great help, compared to speeded-up videos.

I would love to have a book by Murad Khan Mumtaz about how his tradition was taught to him. As he says, he was taught 'this is how you make blue'.. and that was that! Difficult as it is to find the sort of information Dr.Kim's book provides, it is a monumentally difficult task to find how precisely how things are done in a given time, region and workshop. As someone whose first area of formal study was the archaeology of industries, I'd be first in line for a copy of a book like that. As balance to the techno-scientific and the connoisseur sort of commentaries, a workshop-tradition book would be great. Even a video or two.. PS - when researching Mughal art (almost 50 years ago), I noticed a very consistent pattern for what colour could be placed directly next to each, and sequences of 2 (sometimes more) colours needed between two particular colours. (I'm including white as 'colour'), Could Dr. Mumtaz comment on whether that was part of what he was taught? It seemed to be to be the secret of Mughal art's never becoming 'muddy' to the eye, even at a distance, as much medieval western manuscript art does.

This vedio series was a great help during my miniature elective. It is very process-oriented and the format really helps to evoke that characteristic patience and mellow temperament that miniature painting somewhat requires.

i sat with interest to see but more than 50% of the video was extended with unnecessary balderdash and how to sharpen the pencil..anyone who is ready to do complex line practice obviously knows how to sharpen a pencil. Moreover, even if you don't sharp your pencil with a blade or cutter, you can use an electric sharpener or plane sharpner..no big deal..come to the point, which is important rather than beating around the bush.

Hi there! Thanks for watching. Kameelah is referring to the work of Ashon (no "t") Crowley. You can find more info on Crowley's work here: ashoncrowley.com

They speak of the "Black body"...in the Bible (though this is certainly not well known) souls can die. To me, this painting is also pointing to violence not only against the body but the soul. The "defacement" of mankind in the Bible, (Isaiah 25) is death and the forces of death and death does not stop with the body. By the way, this defacement in Isaiah 25 is a part of the victory of God-- which is the victory of mankind and the wiping away of all tears. Interestingly, the chapter is not plight to solution but rather begins with the God of faith who gives us all a good beginning/birth. We can only see how truly bad things have gotten in the light. My overall impression of the painting is that this is a man, this is an artist, who can see.
