Wow, thank you for listening! I've included a lot of info in the description box that you might be interested in. I am using Aquila Nylgut Minstrel Banjo strings. I am tuned to Sawmill, which is gDGCD. Your compliment really made my day, thank you.

@@chickenindoubleCof course I was just thinking your sound is so pure and it has all the feeling that I think defines this music at the core. I should have read the description! I have a minstrel tackhead banjo arriving in a couple weeks and this is one of the first tunes I’m going to learn. Love Clifton’s stuff too.

Thank you, friend, that is really humbling. Thank you for taking the time to listen and for all your knowledge. In fact, I would not have this instrument if not for you. I've updated the description to reflect that and I'll be sure to acknowledge you wherever I mention the 309's origins.

High upon highland low upon Tay Bonnie George Campbell rode out on one day, All saddled all bridled and booted rode he Home came the saddle but never came he A plume in his bonnet a sword at his knee Home came the saddle but never came he, Home came the saddle all bloody to see Home came the good horse but never came he His wife came inside to escape the night air Sat at the table and wept in despair, "My barn is unbuilt and my child is unborn Bonnie George Campbell will never return."

I am from old east Virginia, North Carolina I did go There I met a fair pretty maiden, though her name I did not know Her hair was gold and curly, her cheeks were rosy red On her breast she wore white linen, there I longed to lay my head Rather be in some dark holler, where the sun don't ever shine Than to see you with some other, and to know you'll never be mine But I must leave old North Carolina, I must leave you all alone Gonna cross those Blue Ridge Mountains, east Kentucky will be my home When I was lost out on that mountain, wild dogs mournin' in the air I miss that gal from North Carolina, with those blue eyes and the golden hair When I'm asleep I dream about her, when I'm awake I see no rest Every moment seems like an hour, many a tear o'er her I've shed I have kept each of your letters, I hold them closely to my heart But this ring that you gave me darling, from my hand shall never part Captain, Captain I am dying, won't you take these words for me? Take 'em back to old east Virginia...tell my darlin' she is free.

Pretty fair damsel out in the garden a strange young man came riding by he rode up to the gate to greet her said: "Pretty fair miss, would you be my bride?" "I have a true love in the army and he’s been gone these seven long years and if he stays gone seven longer no other man can marry me" "Perhaps he’s in some ocean drownded perhaps he’s on some battlefield slain perhaps he’s to some fair girl married my pretty fair miss, you’ll never see him again" "Well if he’s drowned I hope he’s happy or if he’s on some battlefield slain or if he’s to some fair girl married I’ll love the girl that married him" Well he slid down from off his saddle and from his finger drew a ring "I am your true and loving soldier I have come home to marry thee" Arm in arm, they walked together down to the church on their wedding day they joined their hands, and hearts together the soldier boy and his fair young maid.

@chickenindoubleCАй бұрын
Thank you for stopping by! Of course I don't mind, thanks for asking! I am in double C here, but tuned way low. Probably 3 steps or more! So that would be about dGDGA or wherever your voice feels comfy

Cool! How does the shorter scale length feel while playing? Is it a noticeable difference in your opinion?
@chickenindoubleCАй бұрын
Yes, absolutely! It is definitely more comfortable and better for my short arms and little hands but there is a bit of a difference in sound (couldn't tell you what exactly...I aim to figure this out soon). I will say, the 309 was/is in worse condition than my other instruments, so that might impact how much I like it too!

What tuning are you in for this one? I'd kill for the tabs if you ever got the time. One of my favorite tunes and it's not often covered. Great rendition.
@chickenindoubleCАй бұрын
Thank you so much! I have only ever seen a tab once, actually, so unfortunately I can't help there! The tuning is essentially double c WAY down. I think I am relatively tuned down 3 or four steps, to dGDGA. That is half the battle--my friend @thomasowenfolk helped me figure that out. Otherwise, by watching and listening I bet you could figure it out in no time! Thank you for listening.

Keep going! I've never heard of the "songster" analogy before, but it is what I do ..... I've never got the hang of two finger style, so this is one or two steps ahead of what I could do. The comment about tab took a long time for me to realise. The same is true for sheet music though, dots aren't the music..... Good luck!
