When your guest came on, I was struck by the incongruity between what she is saying and how much of her body is covered in fabric. She is dressed as modestly as a Medieval nun. Is having to be that modest consistent with feminism? I hate the way Liz uses the passive voice to describe the left-wing schism with religion and the concentration of religion in the right-wing. Her description implies this just a sort of natural occurrence. Would anyone really deny that the American left has been openly hostile towards religion (Christianity/Catholicism in particular), since at least the 1960s. Religious people know the right is full of shit, but at least they pretend to have respect for Christianity. The Left cannot even hide being antagonistic towards religious people. I am sure everyone in this video is too important and well educated to give a shit about culture-war issues, but religious people care about those things and they keep them away from the left.

I think a discomfort we have on the left is realizing some religious denominations are wrong, and that while we can allow people to hold wrong beliefs, we cannot allow those beliefs to inform policy. And when I say wrong religious beliefs, it's not exactly controversial. We (at least on the left) can agree the Buddhist killing Rohingya in Myanmar are wrong. As a Buddhist myself, I can say they are wrong and that the world would be better if their hateful ideology were gone from the earth. We can say the Westboro Baptist church is wrong about their idea that God hates homosexuals, and they use their faith to elect bigoted lawmakers. I think we can call bigots and genocidal cults wrong in their beliefs. That said, there's also tons of common ground. Ultimately, I think liberals and religious people want peace and for everyone to live a happy life. From that common ground, we can talk about what it means to support or oppose gay marriage, to support or oppose universal healthcare, etc. I think we can have a lot of important disagreements, but ultimately we can return to what we can agree on and work from there.
