When I 1st went to S.Korea it wasn't good. The people ( at least around the base ) were horrible, and rude, it was a sh! thole and Sh! tshow. After the olympics it improved by 10x. I went back as a contractor and stayed mostly at my hotel in the Kangnam area by the subway in Seoul, or Seongnam if I was not at Osan AB. I loved the people , the folks I meet and just hanging out in PanBae-Dong shooting pool with my liaison and his friends.

Korea is filled with good people that have common courtesy and mutual respect, that’s why these military guys don’t need guns. Only the Korean police have guns on them

You make Korean citizens feel safer. Though 90% of soldiers conduct themselves in a manner that their country can be proud of, but you guys are the only authority to reign in the bad 10% quickly and effectively. Some people go to another country and feel like the law doesn't apply to them and they need to see another "American" face to tell them to stop. The reputation for drunk "handsy" Americans has unfortunately only gotten worse and worse.

They’re in a friendly foreign nation that has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. It’s not Afghanistan or Detroit lmao. You also don’t need to be strapped up to deal with drunk soldiers. Duh duh.

I was there 04-05. Worked at the hospital. Our barracks were behind the px. Walked to work every night all the way across base. My wife visited me over thanksgiving. We had our first thanksgiving as a married couple at the Popeyes that was in the food court! I remember there was a nice little movie theater there. It was a really nice post. The South Koreans built most of those buildings for us over the years. Wish they would do something with them (allow citizens to move in to the housing) so they don’t have to tear them down.

That's a precious video. I served as a compulsory police officer in 2017-2018. I was always curious about the inside and the bridge when I guarded the Yongsan base.

We were stationed there in '04/'05 - so very sad to see it like this, because the norm for Yongsan was it was always packed. Try to find a parking spot near the PX/Food Court during lunchtime - not gonna happen. The Dragon was always, always buzzing with activity. My daughter and her friends had run of the place and it was a wonderful place for them to grow during their middle school and early high school years. A lot like living in a small town, but in the middle of one of the most cosmopolitan cities on the planet. We visited in Fall of '22 - stayed at the Dragon, which was in dire need of updating. Not sure what the long term plans for that place are. I could easily write 500 words here on seeing Yongsan like this, but suffice to say that change in inevitable, but nonetheless it still breaks your heart...

I went through in ’86. It wasn’t a Dining Facility, it was a Mess Hall or Chow Hall. There wasn’t anything on the menu that was listed as vegan friendly, vegetarian, gluten free, etc., because no one identified as being any of those. Fifteen minutes to eat? I wish. The Drill Sergeants were screaming to “eat now and taste it later”. Then we ran back to the barracks. Good times!! 😂

When I drop my rifle to grab my pistol I have the bottom of the mag facing to my rear. Less play. More connected to my body. I can move around without my rifle swinging around. But this video is very informational. Thank you.

Rewatched your video and I noticed my old MP unit was there at 6:45. Were there soldiers from the 870th MP Co, 49th MP BDE, alongside you during that deployment? That unit last deployed to Eastern Afghanistan from 2011-2012 and were attached to 1st ID, a few soldiers wore that patch instead of the 49th MP bde patch. Unfortunately, they lost a fellow MP towards the end of their tour. Which unit were you with during that time? Btw, you were my drill sergeant during OSUT.

US MP educate(?) the US soldiers in Korea if they make a fuss. eg, some US soldiers made loud noise and played firework late at night in Busan on US' independence day, then, US MP patroled with Korean police. (none of them got caught as they were notified in advance, ran back to their barracks already. lol)

I was in the Army for 20 years and was assigned to the Republic of Korea 3 different times, several for multiple extended tours. My advice is the following: 1) This is not the USA. Don't judge them using the standards and norms from the USA. Use theirs, they aren't that hard to learn. 2) Even though there are many Christians in Korea, the relationships and culture are based on Confucianism. Learn the basics of that and you'll have a much easier time understanding what your correct actions should be. Most Koreans will know you aren't an expert in showing the right types of respect but they appreciate that you are trying. Common curtesy in the Korean style goes a long way. 3) Try to learn the basics of the language. Learn the Korean alphabet which is phonic based and can be learned in a few weeks. When you learn to pronounce Korean words, learn them from then Hangul alphabet. 4. The biggest issue with too many American soldiers is speaking to loud in the wrong situation. 5. Korea's history dates back almost 6,000 years. They are a proud, hardworking people that deserve respect, Remember you are a guest representing your country. Don't be an "ugly American!" 6. Decide to have fun and learn. Every country I went to during my service, I decided to be happy.
