I agree with your point that it's better to check out the five players you mentioned first - I imagine that John Patitucci or Larry Grenadier would say that what they play is just borrowed from the masters. But with that said, isn't it kind of negative to say that walking "isn't a strength" of those two? I feel like Hank Jones or Stan Getz for example wouldn't have hired them if that were really the case? Love your content and playing but I thought this was worth discussing

Yes it possibly was un-necessary, however, I'm trying to drill home the point that we have to set the highest standard possible, specifically for walking bass. There are acceptable high level professional levels of walking bass which will get people gigs and then there are levels above that. Some players are just famous and get gigs because someone has heard of their name. A lot of my students have a dodgy feel because they've emulated the wrong right hand technique and could have prevented this if they'd checked out the masters.

Slow triplets as in quarter note triplets?I thought I heard u do that starting on the swing upbeat, yeah?? anyways/ I like your rhythms and time feel. I'm always amazed at how going from swing 8ths to straight 8ths has such a different feel / I first really heard this with Monk/

How to practice this? I see that using mostly ghost notes to fill up the pockets is the way to go. Is that right?

Love hearing thoughts about subjects like this. Improvisation often gets talked about in practical / technical terms and the personal / psychological aspects are rarely discussed, even though the players we look up to most are tapping into something that goes way beyond technical ability.

Maybe the older generation of player has had far less access to the stuff they played so they worry about it less? Nowadays everything is captured and put online immediately so people can't escape their mistakes.

Love the share, thank you. I am a believer in practicing along with great music. I am a Drummer who wishes bass players would practice inside the music not just adding another part.

I think that part of the issue is that many students of jazz are not only taught to have the metronome on 2 and 4, but are taught to tap on 2 and 4 as well--regardless if what instrument they play. If everything is 2 and 4, and you have no context for the DOWNBEAT--than NOTHING is 2 and 4. My old teacher had me get OUT of the habit of tapping on 2 and 4. Now I have one foot taping 1 and 3, and the other taping 4. The click can move around to work on different relationships with the meter and pulse, but you gotta know where that DOWNBEAT is at all times. I play guitar, by the way ;)

maybe you should have taken a seat and put that upright bass aside if you were not going to play it anyway. I was actually hoping to hear some examples.

The reason to play it the way Ray Brown did: there’s less hand fatigue, and less overall fatigue, if you mostly use the big muscles of your back, shoulder and arm to play. It leaves the fingers with energy when needed for the trickier/faster moments.
