How about the lumix GH series?... GH6 and GH7 to be specific. Would those be a good video-first camera replacement, compared to the Blackmagic 6k?
@RobertConwayMovieGuy2 сағат бұрын
Overall image quality I would give to the 6k but the GH7 is very impressive. The ibis on that is amazing and the small sensor never bothered me. I shot a feature on the GH5S back in the day. Great systems now that they fixed the auto focus.
Makes no sense to me… You went from a Red to the FX 30. That’s like going from a Lamborghini to a Volkswagen bus. And you admitted that the dark scenes were shot on the a7s3. Thanks for the transparency. The FX 30 with its rinky-dink baby sensor… Makes no sense.
@RobertConwayMovieGuy20 сағат бұрын
The reasons I made that decision are explained in the video. There are many things to consider when picking a camera for a job. Overall image quality can’t be the only consideration when funds are tight and workload is high. The lightweight system with amazing autofocus wins over the big cinema rig on a micro budget feature. Just the way it is.

I've been looking for exactly this kind of video. I'm re-entering photography & video after a LONG hiatus (from the film era) & just purchased the Nikon Z8. I'm interested in knowing what you see as the future of Nikon after buying RED & whether you see the Nikon ecosystem as a possible hybrid stepping stone down the road about 3-4 years into the cinema world. I'm having to relearn a lot due to the tech but hope to see myself making cinema projects in 5 years. I shot professionally as a videographer back in the day.
@RobertConwayMovieGuy4 күн бұрын
@@MarkLewis-l3f Hi Mark. Welcome back to the production world. The Z8 is a very nice peace of kit. 12 bit internal raw in 8k is really amazing. I don’t have much experience with the brand but I hear good things. It will be interesting to see what Nikon chooses to do with Red. I know there’s hope about them releasing a Red cam with a Blackmagic price tag. That sure would be nice to see as I love Redcode. As for all the tech stuff, you have a very capable camera there and I would start by putting it through the paces. Shoot raw 8k and log 422 and compare the two. What’s funny about raw is that sometimes it creates more problems than it solves. The lack of internal noise reduction makes it less than ideal for high ISO shooting and the file sizes are a pain to manage. Where raw is king is in color representation. I expect you’ll have a lot of fun finding out what best suits your workflow and let me know if you do some test shoots as I’d be interested in seeing them. Thanks for watching!

Flexible iso instead of native? Haven’t ventured that way yet. I always shoot either 800 or 2500. So you’re saying that there are benefits in shooting at higher ISO values?
@RobertConwayMovieGuy8 күн бұрын
Hi. Flexible ISO over Cine EI, however since making this video, I’ve actually begun to use Cine EI and it’s somewhat useful. However, when shooting 4k 120 FPS, use flexible at 200 ISO for best results. I’ve never pushed the ISO past the native. 99% of the time, I stay at 800. 2,500 is okay, but in a low light situation, the FX30 isn’t the greatest. But no, I would never want to push the ISO past 2500.

When you say you're using autofocus, are you shooting most/all scenes with continuous focus on? Or are you using it to acquire initial focus? When you don't have a dedicated focus puller and need a focus pull shot, do you find AF Is good enough? Thanks
@RobertConwayMovieGuy8 күн бұрын
With the Sony cams, I use continuous AF. Tip, many reassign the shutter button to be stop and go. Don’t do this. Leave in default position and hold down if you have a subject in motion or a subject that’s going to leave frame. Pressing down on shutter locks focus on subject and prevents focus hunting. For racking focus, adjust settings to slow focus pull speed and it will look more natural. But if using photo glass, breathing will be quite noticeable. For the most part I use phot glass with this system so I don’t do a lot of focus pulls

As long as you don’t need more than ISO 2500 (& most pro Cinema cameras don’t ever go higher than 3200!) the FX30 is a BETTER image than the FX3- the down-sampled image is cleaner & better! If they ever allowed for full sensor external RAW feed for a recorder no one would buy an FX3- which is why they probably won’t ever allow that!

@ You seriously think that sensor size determines image quality?!? Tell that to all the award winning movies shot on Super 35! Do a bit of research on the people who actually have tested the sensors of both the FX3 and FX30 - I am simply quoting the results! Honestly there is NO modern cinema camera out there that cannot create great images with our current tech. The reality is that the FX30 does beat the FX3 at lower ISO’s- the FX3 cleans up in the ‘dark’.

The A74 and the Blackmagic 6K are my 2 main cameras. The A74 is versatile but I just really hate the Sony menu systems. So many buttons and menus to navigate, and sometimes it can be annoyingly finnicky. Not being able to set a custom white balance when you are using a memory recall preset is frustrating beyond all hell.

@RobertConwayMovieGuy that's how I do it as well. Fine for most scenarios, but if I want to white balance using a card it says "this option is disabled under memory recall mode" which is just wild. thanks for the good tips. I just upgraded to a Canon R5c and still experimenting with it. I'd like to know your thoughts on whether it would be considered a cinema or more on the mirrorless side. (I mainly shoot commercials, music videos and weddings, photos\videos)
@RobertConwayMovieGuy16 күн бұрын
@@TRVISION I would consider it a highbred mirrorless cam with very good cinema features. It reminds me of the Sony A7siii or the old Panasonic GH5s where they were clearly highbreds but packed with cinema features not often found on mirrorless. The key difference in the R5c is that it doesn’t seem to have suffered in the stills department by having good cinema features. For example, the megapixels on the A7siii were far lower than other Sony full frames to increase low light performance but the downside was that even though it was clearly a mirrorless camera, the quality of the still images were substantially reduced. But mirrorless isn’t a bad thing. In many ways they’re superior and I’m not surprised that bigger productions are using them.

For years I've been recommending beginner DPs start learning on old DSLRs like the Canon 5D MKII since they're dirt cheap nowadays and super limited in terms of features. They look like crap outta the box but if you spend time actually trying to craft an image, they honestly produce some really cinematic 1080p video.
@RobertConwayMovieGuy18 күн бұрын
Good advice for sure. Anything with manual setting is key for a beginner to start understanding how proper cameras work. The Pocket 4K would be my recommendation for someone’s first cinema camera.

No one wants to see a heartfelt drama that is performed really well and filmed really well? I find that really hard to believe.
@RobertConwayMovieGuy20 күн бұрын
Many want to see it. Many want to make it. The sad thing is, no distributer wants it on the micro level. Simply put, drama for the most part, is cast dependent. Meaning you need well known actors who cost millions. All this being said, if you’ve got a great drama that you feel strongly about, then by all means, do it. If it comes out good it will find an audience. And of course the film festival circuit loves drama. Just hard to monetize is all I’m saying.
@RobertConwayMovieGuy20 күн бұрын
@@xuntouchablex6879 I once wrote a dramatic script about a mother facing a terrible end of life decision for her terminally ill daughter. The problem was no one would finance it. So, I rewrote it with a supernatural twist and I got the money. Here is the trailer. Something you might want to consider. Taking your drama but adding elements that make it more commercial. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6XOqJaYjpWJgaMsi=BKYp3UY7ON8HZM0v
@xuntouchablex687920 күн бұрын
@@RobertConwayMovieGuy I never understood needing to finance a drama. Look at what Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver did in Marriage Story in that one scene when they are fighting in the living room. I firmly believe that if you have talented actors, (no names or names), and the shots are well planned and well lit, you can create amazing stories that will rip people apart from the inside leaving them numb and wanting more. You don't need full fledged films to create iconic and emotionally gripping scenes that really showcase the performances of the individuals involved. And, who said that you need to build a massive production from the start? If I was a filmmaker right now, I'd create short, emotionally gripping scenes, and post them on KZbin as a KZbin channel and have that finance bigger projects from the revenue that comes from that. Will it take time to build? Ofcourse, but you're no only getting practice done, but you're also building your resume for bigger projects to show potential investors that you can create really powerful visuals and performances. Also, fuck film festivals. Film festivals don't mean shit if you can build massive popularity from your scenes to where hundreds of thousands or millions (if you're really good), of people are watching your stuff. Eventually someone from the industry will take notice and you'll get a deal.
@RobertConwayMovieGuy20 күн бұрын
I’m not any disputing that. My advise is based on what’s commercially viable for independent filmmakers. Recently I went out and shot a short film just to do it. There is a great freedom the comes with writing art that doesn’t require monetization. Shorts are also great for demo reels and film festival submissions. Just different goals for different types of work.

@RobertConwayMovieGuy2 ай бұрын
@@4kfilmstudioproduction534 APSC or in cinema terms is super 35. About .5 smaller than full frame. For a very long time digital cinema was dominated by APSC/Super 35. Recently manufacturers of high end cinema cameras have started offering large format sensors like the Arri LF, Red Raptor, Sony Venice II. It’s a strange way this came about because professional followed prosumers lead. As for 7OMm that’s IMAX so it would be interesting to see. Resolution may be a bigger factor than sensor size. The more resolution, the higher amount of detail but honestly, I don’t know. Only one thing I will say is that many Hollywood features were shot on cameras like the Alexa Mini that utilized a sensor that wastes full frame and unable to shoot native 4K. Many of these films played in cinemas all over the world without any issues.
