Hi ! I do agree with your 5 points ! It was so close to being perfect. I actually tend to think the Reface series is dumbed down on purpose. For instance, the CP has a strange "feature" : sound is played from velocity 2 and not 1 ! The YC has no velocity sensitivity. The DX seems pretty good but the UI makes it difficult to actually alter the sound while playing. The CS is the one I'd have preferred and has the most flaws. The fact Yamaha barely updated the firmware despite its success and its being available for years makes me think it is indeed on purpose... Cheers !
@keyhoarder27 күн бұрын
yes, you could be right that the flaws were planned. Lack of possibility of changing the sound in real time is one of the things why i sold DX. Other was that im really not the FM synthesis fan (but i must admit many patches on the DX sounded great). Other was only 32 bank, which is a shame considering thousands of sounds avaiable in the web. DX would be much more functional with the sliders like CS. I also had YC and i was quite irritated that the vibrato/chorus was practically the same. In my opinion, YC sound would really benefit from the proper chorus effect. That sound played from velocity 2 (i understand you mean from 1-128 its 2-128?) seems like some bug in the software in CP. I wonder if the same is in the DX?
@Mahenounet27 күн бұрын
@@keyhoarder Thanks for your reply :) Yep, on the CP, no sound is played when velocity = 0 and velocity = 1. Which means that, when you hit a key super gently, no sound is produced, which is annoying because then, you hesitate to play subtly (I did keep a CP for a couple years). I cannot believe this is an unintended bug :) Well... If those were cheap, that would be understandable. :)
@keyhoarder27 күн бұрын
@@Mahenounet yeah it could be easily fixed by an update... like some of the flaws of CS
@kurtwestphal25135 күн бұрын
I see a lot of posts about the cp’s velocity response. I don’t currently have my Rhodes or acoustic piano handy, but isn’t that the way they respond? If you press very lightly (velocity one) there is no sound. That would imply that is not an error, but an attempt to accurately mimic the originals.
@Mahenounet4 күн бұрын
@@kurtwestphal2513 Oh ? I didn't know that. On my Roland digital piano for instance, if I press extremely lightly, I still get a sound and a velocity=1 note on event. What I meant is that, the way it is implemented on the CP, it is actually distracting -- well, you have to get accustumed to, otherwise you might get no sound when trying to add nuance -- which is not that easy on such a small keyboard, even if it's probably the best mini keys I ever encountered.

hi! I have a yamaha psr-48, but I would like to add 2-3 styles via MIDI. My question is if it is possible?
@sauermusicDEКүн бұрын
This model has no internal memory space itself for the purpose of integrating additional styles or whatever (a feature that can be found quite often nowadays on modern mid-range arranger keyboards). You can only sort of "trigger" an external device via MIDI, like for example arranger modules from Roland (RA-50, RA-90 etc.), Solton (MS4, MS20 etc.) or Korg (i5M, i40M etc.). A few years later (in the mid 90's) Yamaha came up with the PSR-230 and -530...making use of Yamaha cartridges to add a few extra styles.

yeah it is very likely, that even if the chip were slightly different, all these Yamahas with 2OP FM synthesis sound very, very similar. PSS 270 also has portamento, vibrato, and stereo symphonic. Yes, Casio shared the sounds with many models. Usually its like they're not the same, but they have something in common. WK series were top of the range, more professsional arrangers, while LK-100 were lower, educational models. CTK 650 is somewhere between them.

I never said it couldn't be played with two hands. I've even seen some bands play their "keytars" with both hands while wearing it with the strap. Not easily but it can be done. My point was that "keytars" in general (not just this model), we're designed to be worn and played like a guitar. Thus the name "Key-tar". Like Gui-tar, but with keys instead of strings. Good video though. Wish the sounds were better. I never knew it was a 2 operator. That explains a lot. I'll have to pull mine out of storage and see if it still works.
@keyhoarder2 ай бұрын
i also didn't say that, but just after some time i've realized that the effect section (vibrato/portamento/sustain) behave different because of the one hand/two hand switch. Yes, playing the keytar on the strap is cool with one hand on the neck and other on the keyboard. Playing two hands on the keybed looks worse and its not comfortable. At least with the smaller keytars. This 2op FM is the same technology as used in many Yamah keyboards. Also the Stereo Jack out is unfortunately kinda noisy, and loud at the same time, which is a problem with recording. I had to pull the volume down to avoid distortion.
@jdorozco12752 ай бұрын
Received one of these as a Christmas gift back in 1988. It came with a Yamaha shoulder strap so it could be worn like a guitar. It was really designed to play lead lines one handed as your left hand would help supporting the unit with the built in handle on the left end, and use the miniature modulation wheel with your index finger. The three buttons next to the pitch wheel contolled vibrato, portamento and sustain. No pedal jack. It only had midi out, ¼" output jack and 12v ac input. It also ran on 6 size "C" batteries, but they didn't last very long as was typical of most electronics of the 80's. Let's just say it looked better than it sounded. Still fun though and allowed for keyboard players to get out from behind their rigs and join the guitar players front and center stage!
@keyhoarder2 ай бұрын
@@jdorozco1275 thanks for the comment. I demoed it like a classic keyboard because it would be hard to film with a strap on the shoulder, As everything would be upside down. There is a switch one or two hand playing. On two hand the vibrato portamento and sustain ale permanent, on the one hand play they are temporary for the expressiveness of playing. I will definitely film it one more time with the commentary.
