Even changing the text on the low D does not make much difference in the quality or volume of the sound. Pinza’s version, even in Italian, is still among the best that I have heard. O.K, he was singing in the studio but having heard him live elsewhere he definitely had the notes & he was a basso cantante.

I, as an opera and singing enthusiast, went studying the documented vocal extensions and impressed myself with recordings of people reaching the deepest and highest extremes of human voice in concerts of hundreds, and when I look at the comments, I see these performances that are amazing before my eyes being criticized with such asperity and unamusement as if they were executed by mere amateurs! I hope I learn enough to properly judge the pieces myself soon, but I wouldn't complain if a more informed individual would educate me on this.

I can say you that this man is very professional singer and is a very very good at it, normal people criticize him for the not-the-top-1-worlds-best-on-this-particular-evening lowest note (which is a lot richer and stronger than 99% of people) because they don't really know anything about anything. They also seem to ignore how different microphones catch bass notes differently. I'm studying classical singing stuff at university, has seem him live singing and god it's just so good.

Matti Salminen is fenomenal bass singer. I agree Kurt Moll is the best but one who gives bigest emotion in this numera is Martti Talvela.

Low D... at the times when the roles were given, there was just basses and tenors, somewhat low was bass and high was tenor. Then they invented baritone, and people started to listen how low or high one can get. This is not what singing is all about. It is about singing well. Many times bass-baritones do the singing better than basses, although they may miss something in the lowest notes. I watched "Triumphieren" by Kurt Moll in KZbin, and as a presentation, Salminen wins hands down.

I have two recordings of Matti performing this. This is probably the better of the *three* I've heard of him do - which isn't saying much because he's darn good anyway. Of course, given that this is a concert performance versus full production there's going to be some sound and energy differences.
