I'm seventy years old. In the last twenty years I must have listened to this song performed by various artists two hundred times or more. I have NEVER heard a female vocal version of this song that even begins to compare with what you have done here. It is a stunningly melon-collie rendition of a song that was intended to be deeply heartfelt, and the empathy in your soul just glows. I just can't believe that you have less than 2800 views since 2013. I envision you performing on the Ellen Degeneres show, doing this as a a tribute to the people who have died from the COVID-19 Virus. If you are still performing (I don't know anything about you), I encourage you to seek out opportunities to perform this song in a memorial type environment.

Hello, John, Thank you for your sincere and thoughtful comments. I am glad my arrangement moved you. You can follow me on Facebook for more posts. I have been singing songs like this my whole life and much of my musical experience was formed in a small German Lutheran church in Southern Minnesota. I have played "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" hundreds of times and have always loved the melody. All the best to you, Kim

How lovely. I always am glad to to hear one of Paul Simon's own studio or live recordings of this song; Simon's sublime lyric carries the already-everlasting tune from Hassler and Bach to a place that is undeniably new - and true. I also am very fond of covers by Eva Cassidy, Willie Nelson, Kurt Elling and others. But, where many opt for a plaintive (folk) reading of the song, your version - which I discovered just yesterday - has a simplicity and a quiet, resolute strength that leans a little more heavily into the song's hymnic, even anthemic, potential. Dare one say that your reading has more of a heart for Hassler and Bach? Thank you!

Hi John, How nice of you to comment on my video. And you are correct that my roots in Bach and Hassler run very deep. I was trained as a church organist in the Lutheran Church and grew up singing and playing hymns with my family on a farm in rural Minnesota. Kurt Elling re-introduced me to this wondrous lyric and I only added my personal touch. Kurt is one of my college friends who has gone on to do amazing things in the music world. What I do love about Kurt is that he, too, shares his deep roots in the faith, and I believe that comes through in his music. By the way, have you heard Kurt's new arrangement of "American Tune?" It's lovely.John, may I have permission to share your comments on my website? All the best to you, Kim

Hi, Kim. Of course, I'd be honored for you to use my comments on your site. I knew that Kurt Elling had Minnesota connections but am delighted to learn that - if I read you correctly - you and he crossed paths and became friends there. When I commented on your video, I had heard Elling's recording of "American Tune" for his recent album, The Questions, and had seen a video of his 2012 performance of the song with the Metropole Orchestra. A few days later, I heard the more pared-down voice-and-piano version that Elling recorded for his 2012 album, 1619 Broadway. I confess that it's this spare version that speaks to me more deeply right now. This and your own version are my two favorite covers. Sounds as though this might not be an accident, given the resonances between your and Elling's backgrounds. Cheers, J.

This is just wonderful, it is sad but redemptive, and calming. Your video is simple and emotional and very effective. I never thought much of Simon as a writer, vs Dylan or even Billy Joel, but here he has turned on his poet and your rendition In sound and sight is just perfect. Thanks, please put this out in your next album.

...there is something weird with this wonderful song... everybody mean, that this song is written by Paul Simon - well, the lyrics of course are, but not the music. The music comes from a late 16/17th century german composer named Hans Leo (von) Hassler, the most popular editor was J.S. Bach in his Metthew´s passion "Oh Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" - this is also today heard and playd often during funeralceremonies... well, it does´nt matter much, but it is maybe interesting... b.t.w. : I like your version :-)
