I worked at FedEx 24 years and can tell you that anything delicate needs to be packaged to withstand a four-foot drop. Over the years I've found that FedEx Ground is the most economical way to ship almost anything. I don't say that because I'm partial since I quit FedEx as a toxic place to work, just based on what I've shipped and received over the years using all the companies. Anyway, all the best to you in your new clock venture!

I would love to see a video covering how to pack a, say, kitchen clock so that the mainspring clicks don't open if the case is dropped - or am I worried over nothing? For example, would it help to capture the mainsprings in zip-ties and give the recipient instructions on how to release those zip-ties? Thanks for this very helpful video.
@BrackenClockWorks4 күн бұрын
I don't think there is such a thing as "being too careful" with the packing of any clock. However, the likelihood of that happening is pretty small unless the clicks or the ratchet wheels are already questionable. In that case, just let the clock run all the way down or let the power down before packing for shipping. This way there's very little force being exerted on the click.

Thanks for this video on how to securely pack a clock for shipment. I have received my fair share of clocks that were damaged in shipping because they were not properly protected. Your method looks safe and secure. I always enjoy your videos and look forward to more!

I would greatly appreciate the pull tabs on the tape, I wish all shippers would do that. Using blue painters tape is another plus, I always groan when I get an item with bubble wrap covered with packing tape.
@BrackenClockWorks4 күн бұрын
Preaching to the choir with this comment!! Packaging tape should only be used against cardboard. Painters tape is something I personally use a lot of with clocks, whether in shipping or prepping for transport with the customer. It doesn't leave any residue nor does it harm most wood finishes.

When you mentioned cleaning in an ultrasonic bath, it reminded me of a trick I learnt, and that you probably already know. If working with different parts, or different solutions, I often put them into different zip lock bags to keep the main solution clean and reduce wastage and cross contamination. The ultrasonic waves work through the wall of the plastic bags just the same.

I used to use a similar method for cleaning watch parts and platform balance escapements. Small beakers were the trick with water in the main tank and the clean/rinse in the beakers. Worked great until I found a vintage watch cleaning machine. Thanks for sharing!!

How do you clean clock movement? Put all of it into an ultrasonic cleaner or can i use brake cleaner to clean?

I use ultrasonic cleaning machines for most of the work I do. Brake cleaner "can" work, but I personally would hesitate using it when proper solutions are available. At the time of this video, I was using Zenith 251NA, which I highly recommend despite it being rather expensive.

I’m just wondering most of diy I see in KZbin are wearing gloves - is this not necessary? Ty
@BrackenClockWorksАй бұрын
It is definitely best practice to wear gloves. I know there were some parts where I didn’t, but wearing gloves helps protect the finish of the case. Skin oils will damage the finish over time and cause blemishes. Thanks!

Great video! I was given two cuckoo clocks and I got one working perfectly after many attempts. Now I'm trying to figure out how to replace left bellow paper or whole part. Is this something that I could do? Please and thank you!
@BrackenClockWorksАй бұрын
Thank you!! You can replace the entire top portion of the bellows. If you're in the US, you can order them from timesavers.com or merritts.com. The important thing is to measure the length and width of the tops and match them as closely as possible to the sizes available. The old ones can be pried off, clean up the top with a bit of sandpaper, then use a hot glue gun to put the new tops in after putting the old pins and levers into place. Just make sure they're in the correct orientation beforehand! It's a bit tricky to do, but not as bad as one might think. Perhaps I'll do a video on that in the future! Good luck!

That hole appears to have already been bushed it would have better more effective to punch out that old bushing as a whole and out in a new one the same size so it will be perfectly centered
@BrackenClockWorks2 ай бұрын
It actually did not have a bushing previously, though I could see how you would think that based on the ring around the edge. I believe that is either from the stamping process in the factory, or was punched in later using an old repair method for closing holes.

I have a 3 weight coocoo clock, and Ive been told by my grandfather not to pull the weights too far up, but I accidently pulled the left weight near the top. Will the clock be ok or does it require dissembling and reesembling?
@BrackenClockWorks3 ай бұрын
Cuckoo clocks are usually designed with hooks that are larger than the holes through the bottom of the case to keep them from being pulled too high. If the clock is still functioning, then there shouldn't be anything to worry about.

My friend! Thank you so much for this video. My stepfather bought this exact model clock at a yard sale for my mother 15 years for $10. But it came completely unassembled. He passed before he got a chance to put it together. This has actually really piqued an interest in horology for me. I will be assembling it as soon as I can repair one broken bellow. This was very good, but how do you get that protective ring off? I have an Elgin that would run and stop. The dial was loose, so the second hand was dragging on it. When I received it, the second hand was off, probably knocked off by the loose dial. I've tried to get the ring off, and I believe I could tear my thumbnail off on it. There's just no way this one comes off that I can see. Someone worked on the watch, obviously, and left the dial screws loose. There three small holes in the ring that allowed me access to two of the dial screws, but one screw is missing. I'm worried about where it might have gone.
@BrackenClockWorks6 ай бұрын
Usually the protective ring has to come off to gain access to the dial screws. If you can already access them, then the ring must have holes in it to allow that. However, the protective ring can be carefully pried off with a small screwdriver. You can use the hole for where the winding stem goes to help get it started. It's not uncommon for one or more of those dial screws to go missing. As long as 2 out of the 3 are tight, it should be good enough to keep from being loose. If you have any more questions, you can shoot me a message via [email protected], or through my Bracken ClockWorks Facebook messenger. Pictures can help determine the next course of action, as well!
