About 30 years ago, Gary, Ind. was making a bid to become to Chicago what Newark is on this list to NYC. They had a convention center which had been the site of successful events, and the Gary airport opened as Chicago’s third big airport. But the progress was halted by horrible air quality, and a law curbing Gary’s ability to expand its limits pushed through the Indiana legislature by suburban developers. And a certain con artist named Trump built one of his casino swindles (look out America; he’ll do to the whole county what he did to Gary). Meanwhile the steel mills and chemical industries employ very few from inside Gary, but creating unhealthy air that blocks other job growth in the city.

St. Paul is a great (and really beautiful) city that is woefully overlooked. By itself, St. Paul is larger than Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Buffalo and a lot of other cities that have much more exposure simply because St. Paul is overshadowed by Minneapolis. St. Paul has a really vibrant economy with lots of Fortune 500 presence like 3M, Ecolab, Land O Lakes , CHS, Securian, Xcel Energy and others.

They might as well start building skyscrapers. Idk why Alabama is scared to expand, and create a tourist city, why not start with Huntsville?
@cityskylines1121 күн бұрын
As a kid I always was told that they couldn't build too tall downtown because of all the caves. Apparently that's not necessarily true but in in so.e spots i believe it is. Hsv could use a nice 15 or 20 story building.
@vilheard303021 күн бұрын
@@cityskylines11 oh wow so Huntsville has mountains and caves in some spots , that's cool! It makes a little more sense now. A 15-20 ft story building would do the city justice. I've read up on front row, and It appears that the skybridge building isn't happening, but they will proceed with the skybridge. Huntsville is really up and coming, I enjoyed your video!
@cityskylines1121 күн бұрын
@vilheard3030 Yea, HSV is at the foothills of the Appalachians, and it's at the base of Monte Sano mnt. Part is on the mountain, but downtown is at the base. It's a really nice town and there's tons of jobs and opportunities. Also, I appreciate that a lot. Thank you for watching and the comments as well.
@cityskylines1121 күн бұрын
@vilheard3030 and about the caves, I lived downtown when I was a kid and all through high school and there was a cave that ran from the spring in Big Spring Park all the way under the courthouse square and ended directly underneath my house. They actually do tours of it. Unfortunately, I never took one, but if they still do them, I think it would be cool to check it out.
@vilheard303021 күн бұрын
@@cityskylines11 no prob,wow that's pretty cool about the caves being under your old house, too bad you didn't get to explore. I actually used to live in Huntsville for a short period of time in 2019 after leaving California, I felt like I was home for a minute lol. Huntsville is a very clean nice city with a mega-town feel to it. I can only imagine the growth that it's experienced since I've left. I want to move back there one day.

Fort Lauderdale???? 🤔
@diodelvino304816 күн бұрын
Yes, Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area is the official name, Ft Lauderdale would be the 2nd city thats outshined by its larger neighbor, just like he said in the video.
@29Texan26 күн бұрын
Fort Worth would be the largest city in about 43 of the 50 states... It's insulting to call it "Dallas" or say that it's "part of Dallas".
@scott453722 күн бұрын
You can have it, we don’t want you
@diodelvino304816 күн бұрын
Well he literally laid out the criteria in the beginning of the video, the 2nd cities are cities part of the metro area and often outshined by their larger neighbor. and thats true for Fort Worth. Even the Dallas-Forth Worth metroplex is officially " Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington" idk whats the issue.
@29Texan15 күн бұрын
@diodelvino3048 1. *FORT Worth 2. Read and comprehend what I said.
@diodelvino304815 күн бұрын
@@29Texan 1. i don't know what youre hell bent on correcting but i only spelled it wrong once , so calm down 2. You need to learn what reading comprehension is, you didn't say anything hard or complicated you're complaining its insulting that Fort Worth is considered part of Dallas, that's what you said, your words , not mine , its right there and very easy to see, but i corrected you on why because that's part of the criteria, i don't think you even read anything here correctly at all , even what you yourself wrote, i see why Texas ranks bottom 5 in education consistently.
@29Texan15 күн бұрын
@@diodelvino3048 Your "correction" was unnecessary because what I initially said had nothing at all to do with the criteria of the video... I was making a goddamn statement that really wasn't all that related to this. Your smug ass reply was unwarranted. And seeing "FORTH Worth" is annoying. We see it more times than not... and you have the nerve to talk about education. FOH.

I've lived here for so long that I remember when they built 880/580 etc. I-238 was just a 'state route' with a terrific view of people's back yards. It connected San Lorenzo to Castro Valley where it turned into Highway 50 that cut across California and into Nevada. I-880 was called Highway 17 and it went from Oakland to Santa Cruz. Part of that road is still called Highway 17 out of San Jose to Santa Cruz. I remember riding my motorcycle onto the wet concrete of I-580 when they were still pouring it in the Ashland District near Castro Valley. My buddy Larry and I laughed so hard we damn near wet ourselves. The workers were PISSED! We're talking about march of 1965. The two of us still laugh about it to this day.

@marstondavis Great stories! Appreciate you sharing that with us. I lived in San Jose for a little while and I used to drive all those routes you mentioned. I lived right off of I-880 and The Alameda in San Jose, which is right by the city limits for Santa Clara. That strip of 17 from Las Gatos to Santa Cruz is a beautiful ride. Love the Bay area.

The Bay Area has several not only Oakland. But Oakland will be featured as that is the one city that is right across SF. San Jose would be another example as it is arguably the capital of Silicon Valley, is larger than SF and the area play a vital role in tech economy. Also, Buffalo can act as a 2nd city to The Greater Toronto area.
