This was such a great interview. Thank you! I am already planning our 2025-2026 school year. I think I will use Cover Story for our middle school child and One Year Adventure Novel for our high school child, then work our way through all 4 programs. I’ve never found a great writing program despite much searching. This, in spite of already graduating a child who is in college and doing well! Thank you so much. ❤🎉

You mentioned that your son is dyslexic and so is mine! He is going into 9th grade and I was concerned about the rigor of the reading. Did you provide any accommodations to assist with all the reading? For my son, the volume of reading may be an issue.

That's a great question! For this kid, I didn't require the extra primary source reading. He was fine with reading just the lessons. We did do some of the literature selections, but we used audiobooks for that.

I’m so bummed to hear that Generations science is dry and boring! We are starting it this week! Have you done Apologia?I heard the same about Apologia which is why we decided on Generations. What science program do you and your kids like?
@homeschoolwithmoxie2 ай бұрын
I think it was the student workbook that made it dry and boring! The books are actually pretty nice. Since I already had it on hand, this same child is using Generations' God Made the World science curriculum (grades 5-7) and is enjoying it this year. BUT we're notebooking as we read instead of using the corresponding workbook. So, keep that in mind if your kids find it boring! But you never know, your kids may love it. We have used Apologia at all different levels (Jr. Botany, Jr. Anatomy, and middle & high school courses) and the kids have "enjoyed" it as much as you can enjoy science when it's not your favorite subject ;)

Can this be used for a 7th Grader? Also is it one book per school year and if so how many pages did you need to do per day?
@homeschoolwithmoxie3 ай бұрын
Yes, it could be used for a 7th grader. This book goes way deeper into cause/effect than most textbooks, which are usually just fact memorization. You could decide how many days/week you'll be doing history, then divide up the pages that way. Or, if you download their workbooks that go along with this book, and they may have a schedule in there. We never used the add-ons, just read the book. I have Volume 2 in front of me, and it has 11 chapters that are about 20 pages each. You could always add in extra biographical reading of people mentioned in the book to round out the year. Or add in hands-on projects or field trips. If your 7th grader is motivated, they could probably get through both volumes in one school year. Hope this helps!

Have you tried doing literature the Charlotte Mason way? Read, oral narrate if she’s not used to that. Then do written narrations gradually. It’s helped my kids so much and keeps them accountable. We do picture narrations sometimes also or watercolor or even act out what was read. We do this for majority of our readings. Then my kids have free reads they can choose from. Before bed they have their own picks (mom approved). Editing to add read the book Know and tell by Karen glass. So good and might give you some different perspective.
@homeschoolwithmoxie3 ай бұрын
Yes - we have done loads of narration for years! And I love the book Know & Tell by Karen Glass. I wish it had been around 16 years ago when we started :) Thanks for the comment and advice. I think I need to stop overthinking some things (like literature!!) and just go back to tried & true basics like oral & written narrations.

Homeschooling the last child, especially if the age gap in large, does feel like homeschooling a singleton. Our caboose just turned 10, and his closest in age sibling graduated 2 years ago. It's definitely been an adjustment for him and for me. While they did have a large age gap, I still taught several subjects family style, like history, science and geography because they both enjoyed and benefited from it. Last year was my youngest's first year schooling alone, and it was really hard on him! He has always required someone to be by his side 24/7, truly from birth. It can be a bit exhausting at times. I'm learning to push him to be more independent more and more each year, but still can't leave the room he's working in for more than 10 minutes without him coming to find me.😅 I can also relate to the whole Teacher's Guide debacle. I really like how ABeka breaks up their Arithmetic material. They have lesson plans for the teacher and a separate key. I have only bought the key for the past couple of years. We switched from BJU Math. I found it to be thorough, but a much slower pace than ABeka or Saxon. I bought the TG for BJU Math 3 and rarely used the lesson plans, especially since BJU is still written for classroom use, it just seemed to not work most of the time. I taught strictly from the worktext 95% of that year. I'm really intrigued by the Bible study you showed. I will definitely be checking that one out. Thanks for sharing!

For AAS...do you feel like a 5th grader could jump in at Level 5? Or would they need to start at the first level to build on? My son is an excellent reader but not a great speller. I'm going back and forth between AAS or going back thru our Phonics program which is Logic of English (similar to All About Reading). Great recs!
@homeschoolwithmoxie7 ай бұрын
Your 5th grader MIGHT be able to jump in at level 5, but AAS does have a free placement test just to be sure! We've always started a bit behind what we perceive their current spelling level to be just to get a solid foundation (if they didn't already start in level 1). We tried so many spelling resources before landing on AAS for all 5 kids~! Even our dyslexic child did well with this.

Oh I'm glad it was helpful! It really can be as simple as just the student work text for Kindergarten. No need for a teacher's edition - it includes WAY too much for a homeschool mom. @homeschoolwithmoxie8 ай бұрын
They're both excellent choices but very different. Both are homeschool-friendly, that is - easy to use and written to the student. Cover Story includes videos. WWS is completely textbook-based and more cut-and-dry. Very systematic in learning how to outline, write, etc. Cover Story is more creative. Some kids enjoy WWS, some find it more dry. Best choice probably depends on your student. If they would do better with visual/auditory learning, then they might enjoy Cover Story more. Have you checked out my individual reviews of both? I have kids with learning disabilities. I have a 10, 13, and 2x15 year olds, but those oldest are maybe 2nd grade level. Trying to find something engaging. Also, how does it take each day. They cannot sit long especially my 10 year old. We prefer the unschooling method, but I feel they are missing some good history. Did you use the cookbook?
@homeschoolwithmoxie10 ай бұрын
While written in a more narrative style than most textbooks, the MOH is still kinda "textbook-y" if that makes sense. Story of the World might be more engaging to read for them. MOH can take as long as you want it to - if you just want to simplify read the lesson, that's great. If you want to add in hands-on activities, you can. We didn't personally do any cooking with this. We always enjoyed creating figures to add to our timelines for each lesson.

Loved this review! We plan to do BJU 5 math next year, so happy to hear that you love it and don’t use the TE! How do you check answers? (please don’t say you have to work all the problems behind your child to check them 🤣). I almost want to buy the TE just for the answer key. Or did you find an answer key available another way?
@homeschoolwithmoxie10 ай бұрын
It's still fairly easy to check this without the answer key. For something like long division, we just use a calculator. Obviously, if the answer to a detailed problem is wrong, we do have to go back and find the error - but that's a good learning experience in itself. So, yes, I do glance over everything to "check the answers" but it doesn't take more than a couple minutes! I still think it beats buying the teacher's edition and wading through that beast ;)
