Thank you so very much for this very helpful tutorial. You teach in the concise way the exact right thing that we need to know, discussing hyperfocal and the double the distance technique. You make everthing clear and accessible.

EXCELLENT! I found the 3 Ps to help with my wildlife photography here in Alaska. 1) Position. If in the mountains, use the hillside elevation to bet at or slightly below the eye level of the animal. Use the topography to position yourself so the animal feeds towards you with the first photos at eye level with the animal on the skyline of a hill. For perched birds and waterfowl, they typically lift off into the wind so position yourself with the wind at your back. Most wild mammals have a keen sense of smell, so position yourself with the wind in your face for wild mammals 2) Planning. Plan your position so the animal naturally comes towards you in a still position. Often a moose, caribou, or bear will come quite close with that type of planning. 3) Patience. Patience and let that "magic moment" happen naturally and the animal does not know you are there.

Hello, a question if i may, if you choose a focuspoint in the foreground, that can also influence your composition. If you focus, hold, and recompose you have a change in depth. How do you focus in the foreground and aim the lens center higher up for the desired composition?

Finally found someone who addressed the absence of an infinity symbol on a mirrorless lens. Now that I know that is bogus for mirrorlessI can use your solution without worrying about it.! You are the first person I have heard to directly address that. Thank you.

The best thing I got from your video, all of it was very good, but the last 15 seconds really made my day. I never thought about using a loop to look at the back screen.

So you go for M mode (switch off AF) then fix aperture value F4 and keep manually adjusting ISO (pushing up as light fades away) and push more stop compensation (also as light fades away)?

Not mentioned, final evidence of having achieved optimum focus, surrounding dim stars will pop into view as their light is concentrated. It is also helpful to view the screen through a magnifying loupe.

I may have missed something but im using a sony a7iii with a fe 1.8/14 gm lens and this doesnt really help . The issue im faced with is when I start im way over exposed to the point where the screen is white . I can only adjust the ev in iso auto. So if I get the starts I wont get the start as it will be too bright and if i get the sun set I wont get the stars as firstly the shutter speed is all wrong as its set too fast to let stars show and likewise with f stop ect ?

You need to ramp the exposure. Watch the video again and notice he adjusts the exposure manually throughout the timelapse. You expose for the sunset, and as it gets darker you gradually adjust the settings to allow for more light. Then you process through LR Timelapse (link in description) to smooth the exposure jumps.

Thank you for the tips, as always :) I like to photograph in natural light also because I find it more natural and spontaneous. Less time spent trying to approximate flash settings and comparing/reviewing image in playback...I am toying with the idea of learning to use reflectors and LED lights though. Any tips or recommendations. Thank you 🙏

I've not yet had a chance to do start photos, but I recently scored the Rokinon 14mm/2.8 for just $150 from Ebay. I've been doing cloud time-lapses, and so far it's looking great, esp. for the price. If I continue to use 14mm a lot, then I would definitely consider upgrading to the Rok f2.4, and also gain electronic aperture control functionality. Manual aperture is also another minus of the cheapest Rokinon, but it's still well worth the $$.

I liked your way to approach ethicall photography. Respecting the creatures' natural immunity. If I feel that the insect or other creature are frightened then I stop chasing it.I believe that If photographer really love them they feel you are harmless.

That Nikkor AF Micro 200mm F4 is an exotic piece of glass. Most of them can be bought from Japan, but boy are they expensive if you want a minty example. I guess a Tokina AT-X Pro 100mm F2.8 Macro or Nikkor 105mm version are the only choice for most of us on a budget. Having that said I own both Tokina and D850, but I never heard about that lens until I saw your video.

Although filters help to emphasize the photo, I'd be reluctant to use such a thing. Remember, you paid alot of money for the lens you're about to attach the filter to, why not just emphasize the photo you took on a photo editing program instead. If your expensive lens required you to attach a filter, it would have come with a filter attachment when you purchased the lens on the first place!!
