Surprised there’s no comments here. John coached me at Charlton circa 1992. Was a big opponent to Charles Hughes at the FA. He actually sat opposite me and released me for all the right reasons. I was his kind of player but not quite good enough. I found his coaching excellent in a technical sense but far too intense. He would continually bark “pass it, pass it, pass it,” from the sideline which in my opinion froze the players he was coaching and took away their freedom to play the game as they saw it. It was like there was pass and move, and nothing else. No breaking the rules. He was like a good stickler if that makes any sense. In football, I don’t think it does.

So important to have a philosophy, many say they do when asked, but we know very few coaching companies actually have a style of play and a coaching programme to deliver it. Premier Skills coaching is still in my opinion the best programme out there.
