i hope this horse owner? was fined, and had all his horses removed, including Shirley. he hasnt brushed them, done their feet, nothing. he should never be allowed to own animals. yes, it is a good ending, BUT it is one that should never have started!

This is called "slipper foot"' out here in the West and it is caused by keeping an equine confined to a small space for a long period of time with no foot attention.

That pony mustn't have seen a farrier in months. The next step is to have a vet out to do a full blood profile to look for any underlying conditions and to get the medication needed to control the pain and reduce the blood pressure in the foot.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say she got laminitis from having horrificly overgrown hooves.

Depends on the horse's environment, conformation, nutrition, use and other factors. There is no rule (outside of balance) regarding shoes or bare that can be applied to all horses in all places. It's kinda like saying shirts and sandals are always best for every human everywhere always. Parts of North America go from frozen to wet to hot to wet and back to frozen every year. Deserts are pretty well dry always. What may work in Arizona won't necessarily work in Nova Scotia. Cheers:)

I thought laminitis was an inflammation of the internal lining of the hoof causing swelling and extreme pain. This pony looks like it was just in a desperate, long overdue need of a hoof trim. Maybe I'm missing something here.
