Very instructive, I am a BI report developer and while the data modeling section in a semantic model is quite small compared to data warehousing and such, I learned a lot from the difference between a great data model and good enough one, be it performance-wise or even flexibility, the end goal is to build the right data model that must answer business problems or problematic while using minimum resources. I liked the blueprint parallel; it is true, and I do come from Africa; believe me, there we used to build without a proper blueprint, and to continue on this parallel, you can build a house without a blueprint, but if you need to scale (build a skyscraper) without it, the project will fall.

I really like the Ikea metaphor for data transformations, it reflects many of the struggles you can find while trying to transform data 😅

Hi Juan, searching for an Open source BI Tool saw your video, and you nail it. From my experience I encounter same issues, mainly on the security access aspect, when talking about Dashboards, where you might have a consolidate view of data most likely you want to restrict the access, and as you stated there are not solution from out of the box. Any way, came across with an opensource called LinceBI that claims to address that specific issue (did not test it honestly, do not know the caveats, will do eventually in the next few weeks), but if you have spare time maybe you can make a review or just know the tool. In another matter, do you happen to know an open source for data virtualization that expose data through API rest end points, such as Denodo (this one you need to pay). Great video!

Which open source tools did you test ? I use BIRT and we did look at PowerBi lost on performance . Security is an issue as you it is not there out of the box , but it is doable .
