Hello, What can be used instead of rooting hormone? It is fall (late October in GEORGIA, USA. I really don’t need to root anything till Spring (don’t want to purchase till then). I received 4 Dusty Miller cuttings when I purchased 4 ready to plant from California. Now I don’t know what to do with these cuttings. Do I place them inside till they establish or leave them outside to root? ❤ Thnx, Jan

Hi, 😊 if you have any, Aloe Vera is a good alternative, either gel from the shop (as natural as possible with no added products) or if you have a plant use the flesh of a leaf and mush up to a gel and dip the cutting in it. I haven't tried it but friends have and it seems to work well. Good luck and thank you for watching Xx

I live in a more Northern community. The S/F don't dry out by season's end. So I have to rub the buds off the head. Then I put them in a warm dry place to dry the heads out. Then when they are dry, shuck the seeds. It becomes a process. But as you say, it's worth it all to keep the bees fed over the months when most other flowers have passed.

It can be a challenge here as well in more damp summer's 🫤 I have to hang them up in the shed to dry. It's worth it in the end.

I give a good water when I plant them, but then I just water to keep the soil damp and not wet. The soft outer cuticle of the stem will rot quickly if the soil is too wet to damp soil it preferred 👍

@leyazad depends how sunny it is or how hot they get, just keep an eye on the soil and water to keep damp. Check on the every day and maybe water every other day.

Hi, yep, I just top the pot with a thick layer of straw or compost to insulate the bulbs from the cold and bring them in to a covered area of the garden, then I put them back out in spring when the weather starts to warm up. They come back each year, and the bulbs double in numbers each year, so displays grow and change.

Whether you harvest for seed or eating or just let them go for the birds, easiest plant to grow. Put the seeds in the ground, give them water, watch them grow.

I leave it for at least a few hours, overnight is better but the longer you wait the more calcium is extracted from the eggshells. You can leave for days without issue. Thank you for watching Xx ☺️

YESSSS! I pour this on my tea leaves and coffee grounds too whilst it’s still hot. Double whammy. I never use salt

@@GreenFingerTips oh and drying washing inside and using a dehumidifier is so good! Currently got 6 bath sheets and all my tea towels drying in my lounge, got about 10 litres out into my garden with my dehumidifier in 24hours! They’re not even fully dry yet. I use the water to soak brown shredded cardboard before lying it under mulch in autumn. The water will dry up in the sun BUT it will help the cardboard be able to hold more water in the long run. I wouldn’t recommend using the water directly in the garden though as there are mixed reviews about what the quality is like. But I also use rain water and empty all the pet water bottles in the box of boxes too

My compost bin is over 90% Guinea pig and hamster waste (their paper/wood shavings/sand/hay/coir bedding waste, their poop/urine and pellet food) and I find that putting all my used tea leaves and coffee grounds into a 5l until it’s about half full and then adding boiling water to the 4l mark and letting it “brew” overnight and then watering the pet waste in the compost bin really heats it up! I do it maybe once a week (depending on if it’s just my tea leaves and coffee grounds or if I’ve managed to get some at a local coffee shop! I water the heap and thoroughly mix it a few days later to get it to heat up again. It’s a really useful way of speeding everything up

@@GreenFingerTips yesssss! Guinea pigs are honestly amazing!!! I’ve had them for nearly 20 years and wouldn’t be without them. I’ve currently got 4 (two pairs of sisters, all rescued) and they help my mental health as well as my gardens health

Thanks, my mum gave me a small one of these that I put in the garden. I thought it wouldn’t survive in the clay soil but I was so wrong. It’s now spread to a meter across and is about 80cm tall. Lots of yellow flowers now too. Trying to find out how to stop it going too out of control. Where is best to snip it.

Apologies for the delay in my reply to your comment, it was hiding 🤷. To be honest, it's such a strong and resilient plant I cut it back hard and it comes back every time. Cut it back to leave around an inch of new growth without an issue, if you can cut back harder if it's getting very big. The old woodier growth will bud quickly and Fill the plant out. I don't snip at the leaf joints like pruning most plants, shears are fine.

I've done the "Back To Eden" method and woodlice are a PROBLEM! They eat a good amount of my food I grow!!!

Everything in balance. Sometimes if you rejig the ecosystem in your garden and the soil it can take a while to rebalance and some organisms will become more prevalent than others causing an issue such as eating roots and damaging plants. As soon as the ecosystem balances back out the damage will reduce to manageable level/ nothing noticeable. Hope this helps. Thank you for watching Xx ☺️

I try and save as many seeds from as many plants in the garden as I can to sow the next year, but a lot of my sunflowers go to the birds over the winter ☺️🕊️ to keep them happy.

😢 I'm sorry you haven't had much success with cutting. I will admit, my success rate is not 100% either but if you try and place the cuttings towards the edges of the pot you are planting them in, this will help excess water that can build up around the stem drain away, preventing the cutting dying off before rooting. In a round pot I would start planting the cuttings around the edge about an inch apart then put a few in the middle of the pot to use the space. 😂🤦 That's funny, I'm a spoon. I place them in my heated propagator (which is on in the winter/early spring and off in the spring/summer) or on my kitchen windowsill in the sun. 😂🤦🤭

So if I get a branch from a Cherry tree now which is in blossom, the place it in soil with Alovera, will it develop roots?

Unlikely. If it's in blossom it's too late to take soft wood cuttings and too early for hardwood cutting. The plant needs to be starting to grow green shoots and new stems for softwood cuttings. For the hardwood (The cherry cutting in the video are hardwood) you should be taken mid autumn when they stop fruiting, flowering and no new growth. They need to sit over winter, the nodes on the stem where the leaves would have been, where they root from, will calis over and then they root in spring. I have never used Aloe as a rooting agent so I can't say if it will work or not. Maybe I'll do a video trial to see how good aloe is as a rooting agent 🤔

I'm dipping in hormone rooting powder, but this is not essential as they root quite readily without it. I just had it out from another lot of cutting I took.

Why are the tubes buried? I thought the point in the compostable tubes was to start of seedlings and then plant the tubes as biodegradable pots

They don't break down in the time it takes to root and produce leaves and stem growth. I'm just lazy and it's easier to fill them like this. I can't still separate and plant out in the garden.

Thank you Susan for your feedback. Always appreciated to help me learn and improve my videos. I apologise, this would be hormone-rooting powder I'm dipping the cuttings in first. I do this because Dusty Millar stems have a soft fury cuticle which can't hold on to water particles, and if they take too long to root they can rot off with the moisture in the soil. You don't really need it as they root fairly well anyway but it is a precaution. Thank you for watching and please feel free to comment any questions and I will reply promptly. Xx

Around 500ml For 2 pellets but if you add too much water, wait until the compost has soaked as much as it's going to and drain the rest off. Takes around 10 mins 👍
