Thank you for this fun and informative video. So cool that you've written a book documenting how to take care of your 1970 beetle for future generations

Very straightforward explanation of the process, using a standard racing-type battery isolator switch (about US$25) available in any auto parts store. I essentially did exactly the same thing myself, even installing the switch in the left upper side of the right rear kick panel and splicing the switch into the starter-solenoid (power) cable, using crimp-type lugs. It's very fast, easy and almost exactly as you explain it. Thanks for sharing this with the rest of us, Malcolm. [ By the way, my 73 VWDubber (Beetle) had, at one time, a minor battery compartment fire, likely due to the rear bench seat springs having come into contact with the top of the battery when a heavy person sat back there; fortunately, it did little damage other than ruining one of the transverse seat springs (which are a real bitch to find as a replacement, however; I ended up connecting the two broken ends of the spring using a clamp-on tubular crimping tube...seems to have worked well enough). With the keyed switch in this place on the kick-panel, it is easily reached from the driver's seat and is used to 'disconnect' the power to the starter (not to kill the engine while it is running!). ] Cheers!

Sir, I have been thoroughly enjoying your restoration videos. I just recently purchased a 1970 Beetle and have been doing some repair work on it. One thing that I was not familiar with on the 1970 Beetle I owned way back in 1970 was the Rain Gutter on the deck lid. The Beetle I just purchased has one but it is missing the downspouts and the grommets in the rain gutter need to be replaced. Can you please tell me where I could find the grommets and downspouts for the rain gutter? Thank you very much! And thanks for these great videos they have been most helpful! Al Davis

Greetings. May I ask where one gets this tow bar? I have a '74 Super Beetle that I gave to my dad to use in his last days and has been parked for almost 5 years now. :( I need to tow it somewhere to get started on its second restoration (The first time was when I first got it 24 years ago) - I just can't seem to want to let it go. Thank you.

You're the literally the only person to make a video about removing the convertible door windows. The funny thing is I have a manual for the car but it only shows door window removal for hardtops. Thank you for posting this!

Your videos are outstanding, thank you very much. Do you think it would be ok to tow my bug with one of these tow bars across country, or would it be better to rent one of the Uhaul front tire dollys?
@malcolmbeasley24483 жыл бұрын
I would feel safe if the bug has good tires and bearings and use a safety chain and taillights. But remember it is recommended not to back up with it.

I added a kill switch. I did not solder the cable lug. I drilled a 3/32" hold through the lug and used a sheet metal screw. I don't like a flame that close to the battery gases. I used the same switch as you did. Instead of metal I used thin plywood as a backup plate.

Hello Sir, I have a 1973 Beetle and I will be towing it from Wyoming to South Carolina using my Honda Pilot. But I have a few questions have I hope you can answer. 1 - Does your tow bar have a offset? 2 - Where did you get your tow bar? 3 - Do you know if that tow bar will fit on a 1973 Beetle? Thanks Sir. - Rachel
@malcolmbeasley24484 жыл бұрын
The toe bar does not have an offset but I am sure the Supply dealer can advise if it will fit a 73 Beetle. I think it will but not postive.
