Way to low IMO, you work to hard to make it and major abuse on all your equipment. We need to put more value on hay, it can't stay the same price as it was 10-15 years ago when everything else has doubled and trippled. It comes down to testing for protein and TDN if the numbers are good it should drive value. Thats the way I am valuing my own hay that i "keep" i don't sell any its worth too much. I try and get into 9-12% protein if possible and high 50's low 60's TDN and then i don't have to hardly supplement the commodity feed that cost so much. If I was selling i sure wouldn't sell by the bale anymore and sure wouldn't use 5x6 . the smart guys are selling 4x5 bales at almost the same price. Accounting profit? Does anyone commenting actually own a pasture with a heavy load of noxious weeds??? We just bought a small pasture full of thistle, Sericea Lespedeza sunflower and several other ‘weeds’. We don’t yet have the fences repaired for grazing, and don’t have a way to protect goats and sheep yet. (In two years we will be we want to get a start on reducing the seed spreading weeds). We don’t want to resort to weed killer currently. There are some good native grasses but seem to have been over grazed. We’re going to try a late summer burn just to get a start on the heavy weed load.

Depends on the type, quality, cleanliness, weight. Alfalfa is the highest price. Prairie will respond to 30 lbs of N per acre just fine. Old world Plains Bluestem can handle 60 # of N per ac. I have applied this amount to customers grass.

I creep feed all the time. It’s called cow calf on pasture. People who follow the “expert” advice will lose money 7 out of every 10 years. I haven’t lost $ in 23 years. Folks, I’m not a brilliant guy. Highly educated, yes, but not in anything related to agriculture. I am so thankful I went in to this too “stupid” to know what doesn’t work, and just did it anyway.
