The mental gymnastics required to watch and enjoy this is equal to the physicality of Marika Rökk! Especially knowing that Marika Rökk was pals with Jean Ross, (both Egyptian born!) the inspiration for Sally Bowles and know what side of history each "landed".... Ross solidly anti-fascist and Rökk dancing a very different tune....when they both left for Berlin to get small parts in a film together....boggles the mind...

For 1936, this is an amazing sequence. Brilliantly edited. The movie itself, from what I can remember, having last seen it years ago, was OK-to-pretty-good but it's worth it to get to this sequence.

The best songs are used as propaganda. This was composed before the march on Rome, Erika was composed before the Nazis took power, and Battatoi was used before the Imperial Japanese Army sung it. Regardless of its affiliations, its still music. The verse about Mussolini isnt even in this video.
