I was born in 1968, too late to see 2001: a Space Odyssey in theaters. I had to wait until 1977 when MGM re-released it. But dad had the LP soundtrack album, making The Blue Danube and Ligeti's Requiem the first pieces of classical music ever to be permanently burned into my brain. I am a good piano/guitar improviser, with some classical training, so I do play around with The Blue Danube, and have for entire life, But now, looking at this, I realize that if I just study this video, I can finally come to a complete tonal understanding of this matchless waltz, every passing note included. This is a masterpiece of performance. I'd be interested to know how much the performer relied on sheet music and how much was just listening closely to the piece so many times that he finally figured it all out. As a "gifted amateur", my graduate exercise in this sort of thing is the three waltzes from Shostakovich's Suite for Variety Stage Orchestra, which I hammered out on two pianos over 15 years (the first one perished in a house fire). Ultimately the complete Shostakovich was republished in Moscow (I live in Kentucky) and I spent the bucks to get the conductor's score for the entire suite (something like Volume 39 of a 200 volume hardbound set). It was a revelation to fill in the blanks, the stuff I couldn't just hear and play by ear. I had learned it in easy Am but then learned Cm/Bb Major, etc., so I could play the damn things along with the recordings. I am happy just to be an ordinary community musician (my specialties are in the natural sciences, mathematics and computers) but videos like this lead people like me to bust through our current plateaus into great new heights of satisfaction. Thank you so much for posting this. P.S. Speaking of 2001, when I was 15, the University of Louisville gave the $175,000 Grawemeyer Award to Gyorgi Ligeti, commissioning a new piece in the bargain. He came to the concert at the School of Music, and I, goggle eyed 2001 geek and then string bass student, got to meet Maestro Ligeti himself. I stalked him and sat in the row directly behind him and two seats over. They also played Atmospheres, which has eight independently tuned string bass parts. At the end I introduced myself and said (referring to things he'd written himself in the concert programme): "There is Godel, Escher and Bach, and then there is Mandelbrot, Hofstadter, and Ligeti." Ligeti grasped my hand in both of his, and said, "Oh! It is a very kind compliment that you have paid me!" Nowadays people would have video of moments like that but it's one I will never forget. Cheers from Louisville.

Haha, why do you pretend you're playing to an audience? Very cringe. Also robotic playing, no feeling present
