While as a family doctor, I strongly recommend getting regular screening (or “preemptive care” as described by Francis), to detect treatable cancers early for much better outcome, there is no penalty to Canadians for not having this done. I hadn’t realized that in some countries there can be a penalty, beyond the naturally occurring “penalty” of having more advanced disease, with potentially more invasive treatments and lower likelihood of survival. As you can tell, I’m big on screening and early detection!

Definitely a good plan! We got poked and prodded a lot last year during our exams and it was very educational. Part of the reason we chose Houston as our U.S. landing spot given the medical center there.

Re out-of-country Canadians not losing health coverage, in Ontario you can be away 212 days/yr (7 months), with the option of an extended 2 yr absence. This is from the Government of Ontario’s website: “If you plan to be outside Canada for more than 7 months in any 12-month period you can keep your OHIP coverage for up to 2 years if you: -have a valid health card -make Ontario your primary home -have been in Ontario for at least 153 days in each of the two 12-month periods immediately before you leave the country Before you leave, take the following items to the nearest ServiceOntario centre to make sure your OHIP coverage stays active: -your health card -proof of residency (such as a mortgage, lease or rental agreement, property tax bill, valid driver’s licence)

In terms of how long Canadians can be out of country without losing health coverage, it depends on the province. In Ontario it’s actually 7 months, not 6. And as long as you notify the Ministry of Health before travelling, it can be up to 2 yrs (as long as you’ve adhered to max 7 months in each of the 2 yrs prior to the extended absence). See my other comment for details taken directly from the Government of Ontario website.

He lives on his boat in the S.F. Bay Area and he still takes it out himself. It is 47’ long and I wouldn’t even do that myself. He is fiercely independent and fights his age hard. I’ve got him down here for three months, hopefully to socialize the idea to stay down longer when he starts needing support. He love his boat too much, which is a sticking point. Ada’s parents are similar to your parents in that they don’t want to leave their home. There is risk in travel, but I think just as much risk in being sedentary. Hope this helps in some way!

Canadians can only be out of the country for 183 days in any Calendar year. As for the health care, that's a bit different from province to province. I'll PM you our experience, as I really don't want it up on the inter webs. :) Your dad rocks! I'd love to meet him one day!!!

This is true if receiving Old Age Security (and, if applicable, the Guaranteed Income Supplement), but it is not applicable to all provinces in terms of health care coverage. See my comment about OHIP coverage - Ontarians can be away 212 days per year, and for an extended absence of up to 2 years out of every 4.

Enjoyed your video. We live in Austin, Tx. We have been wanting to relocate to Mexico. Somewhat in fear. What do you do for income? Thats our main concern.
@LivingSimplyinMexicoАй бұрын
We don’t yet live in Mexico full time yet. We have two homes in PV, a small one that was a fixer upper/vacation place. We liked PV so much, we invested in a larger home too where we’ll spend our retirement. Our plan was to get in before the cost went up, and that appears to be happening. Meanwhile, Ada has a brick and mortar Pilates & Physical therapy business in the San Francisco Bay Area and also an online business (bewellstaywell.net) based in Houston where we live. We made the shift to Houston to keep residence cheaply in the U.S., healthcare, etc. while our daughter now goes to college. I (Stefan) recently sold my small consulting company, and have to spend more time in the U.S. supporting this business until I retire. As part of concerns & fears, we feel very safe in Puerto Vallarta unlike other areas of Mexico like Acapulco or U.S. border towns. The biggest fear is increasing prices and stability in the U.S. / Mexico relationship. Given all this tariff discussions, I hope for instance that they don’t tax foreign home ownership at a higher rate. Hope this helps!

The Mexico Travel Advisory issued by the U.S. State Dept advises avoiding altogether Jalisco state where PV is located. This is because of kidnappings and crime. Real estate there is controlled by the cartels. Two years ago 8 call center workers were murdered by the cartel. The workers wanted to quit their jobs defrauding timeshare owners, so the cartel murdered them.
@LivingSimplyinMexico2 ай бұрын
Have you been to Vallarta lately? It is booming with tourists. From a tourist perspective and full time perspective it is very safe - much safer than where we live in the U.S. - You still need to be careful of course like anywhere and stay away from trouble. Mexico hosts 66 million visitors annually as a top destination, and Puerto Vallarta hosts over 6 million visitors. There are places in Mexico that are nogo zones, Vallarta is definitely in a safer area. Do check out the Jalisco map here: mx.usembassy.gov/maps-of-restricted-areas/
