Lol why wouldn't the original AM part be manufactured with the mounting holes. Why have a CNC step at all. Defeats the purpose of using AM to reduce costs and simplify mfg.

Lol, none of the concepts fit the flow of the bike, so what's the point. Your trying to make a tool do something for your to lazy to do your self and your get poor results. Use a different tool...

There is a reason triangles and hexagons are used for everything. Having a weird and random skeletal structure might not be useful. Maybe for...game design. Not anything applicable irl.

Triangles and hexagons are used because they're the cheapest to manufacture, but these organic looking shapes have actually the best strength/weight ratios. The only downside is cost. There have been numerous examples where shapes like this ended up being used in production

They showed in the video that the part would be manufactured with SLM printing and would have CNC machined mating faces. The technology may not be totally mainstream yet but it's totally possible.

@@jbruell94 I couldn't say, I work in a lab that provides custom printing services at my university but we don't have an SLM printer, and I don't know much about actual industry costs for SLM. I'm curious about it too, though.

probably could add the "minimum thickness" parameter and also "max number of holes" in order to avoid a large number of tiny struts. instead you'd have fewer, sturdier elements for robustness, aero, design and maybe even simpler execution. needless to say they should be able to be hollow, to minimize weight...

It's not AI, actually. These are optimization algorithms that take a set of weights about desirable characteristics, a few constraints, start from an initial state, and then iterate following some rules, choosing to go to the next step that does not violate the constraints and that scores the most, given the weights. It's a completely "mechanical" procedure that could ben done by hand, except for the fact that the number of cells and the number of iterations would take an eternity to humans to complete. Thus, it is something that's made pratical by the presence of computers that are powerful enough. That was true already more than a few years ago, but back then there was another impracticality: CNC machining these parts costed too much, and in some situations CNC isn't even an option since there are parts of the design that are unreachable - thus, you would like to print the component, and that was not a thing until recently.
