Is it possible for this hawk to be 30 miles east of San Diego? I viewed what I believed to be 2 large ones and a smaller hunting by my house at 1640 hours today. I had a real good 10 min view of them with my Binoculars today and just wanted to confirm the possibility.

We are in Bear Lake Utah and just discovered a Ferruginous Hawk nest at the top of a pine tree near the house. She is beautiful, thank you for this informative video!

We have started seeing these in Northern Kentucky. A pair was spotted at the airport, and we have a pair nesting by our garden. They are magnificent birds.

Two of the 3 Cooper's Hawks noticed a flock of birds on the grass and was swooping down to try to catch them. Both flocks just happened to be that direction that they were in! Great job on the releases!

May i ask why is he/she open her mouth?? And did falcons and eagles throw up parts that they can't digest just like owl??

Birds of prey have some similar habits to a dog. So when they get hot, or excited or nervous, they can pant similar to a dog. Falcons and eagles have stronger stomach acids so they can digest a bit more than owls can, plus they tend to pick the meat off the bones more so they don't always have the pellets similar to an owl, but will occassionally cast out some of the fur and bones that does get ingested that they don't need.

Would you happen to know if some tailed Hawks would be able to catch prey on their own without a vulture? Are zone tailed hawks able to be legally caught for falconry in Arizona? I live in Canada and completed a falconry course a while ago and zone tailed Hawks really caught my eye because of the vulture mimicry.

It's pretty hard to find a lot of information on them so thanks for the video. I've also emailed the Arizona falconers organization to see if there's more information on them

The hawks should still be able to catch prey as they still have great vision and flying capabilities even if they aren't hiding amongst the vultures. As for falconry, we don't have much information about that and it varies state to state/country to country

@@helenlunn1195 go look on the Arizona DWR page under falconry. I’m a falconer in Utah and I thought the same thing about them. I bet they’d naturally wait-on like a peregrine, and chase whatever you flush under them. Really cool species👍🏼

I live in Gilbert Arizona and found a Zone Tailed seeming to nest in an Afghan Pine. Everyday at 4:45-5:00 PM it comes out and soars like a Turkey Vulture. It is actually lived there since November oddly enough. So yes, I think it can catch its own prey without turkey vulture help, as they are very rarely in my area

Nice, informative video! I think one visits me in California, and I think I just saw him today, taking off from a tree outside my back door and leaving behind some regurgitated food remnants. We have cottontail rabbits, squirrels, ground squirrels, and possibly some moles for our friend. I hear winter is coming farther north. It is nice and warm here. I hope he sticks around. It is such a beautiful bird!
