Nope. Someone could say "XYZ show sucks and is overrated" and it would be perfectly valid for somebody else to say "based" It's simply just a word of agreement. Nothing to do with factual statements. Though it was used predominantly in right wing spaces for whatever they agreed with, its more mainstream now and can be used for just about whatever It can also be used to describe something you find really badass. Guy risks his life to save a bunch of people, and succeeds? Absolutely based

Oh, I forgot to say that teaching assisting the Frye course at Vic must have been a real joy. I'm glad you talked about that. And if I might probe a bit, what did you do your dissertation on? Could you tell me a bit about that? thx
@IohannesRhetor
@IohannesRhetor 18 күн бұрын
It was actually pretty stressful. I was 24, in way over my head and half the students were older and better read than me! But I learned a lot. My dissertation is on the interdecting discourses of advice/counsel and satire in medieval literature, and how both serve to construct the authority of the author/speaker.

Great synopsis about Frye's contributions to literary criticism. I haven't heard many lectures about Frye, and the last one I watched (I won't mention the channel) I wasn't impressed with. Nevertheless when this video came across my feed I was excited, and I wasn't disappointed. I read Frye for fun, even though I am still working through his corpus. I really liked his Blake Book, and of course his Code and Words. It's too bad--from my naive impression--there seems to be a bit of a disdain or at least a distancing from Frye in literary studies. For example, the Yale Open Courses Literary Theory course by Paul H. Fry doesn't even briefly mention Frye from what I remember of it. Maybe he is out of fashion or I am misunderstanding? As well, I started reading White because he likes Frye. I am glad you mentioned White; maybe consider making a recording about his work? Anyway, thanks for the upload!

Thank you so much for your video! In what sense do you think Reception Theory developed from the American Modell? I am doin gsome rrsearchf or my MA course on Literary Theories in British Studies and I struggle to really understand and separate Reception Theory/aesthetics from Phenomenology, espeically since it is rooted in the Constance School and overall connected to German Thinkers... Is there a connection at all?
@IohannesRhetor
@IohannesRhetor 18 күн бұрын
I think it's an accidental convergence. Reader response theory comes more out of American pragmatic traditions than phenomenology, I believe. And the European tradition is more grounded in history and hermeneutics.

Hmm. I literally agree with everything you said, but I believe maybe you're misinterpreting the concept of toxic masculinity. Because the idea is that the "baby masculinity" you described is a toxic trait in people. Personally I don't believe it to be "baby" in the sense that it must precede "adult masculinity" (for sake of metaphorical symmetry), but rather it's a form of toxic behavioral traits. There's no reason a boy would need to grow up behaving that way first in order to then become an empathic and openly vulnerable adult, right? There is also no reason a male can't be into whatever hobbies or interests may be associated with typical toxic masculinity while not actually just being a toxic person. The idea is that the "baby masculinity" is like you said someone who enlarges themselves, weapons, skulls, etc is just a lack of an alternative coping mechanism for their emotions. Boys, for many generations, were not taught emotional awareness and being able to name what they are feeling past a superficial level of "angry/frustrated". So the feeling threatened is because they aren't able to handle their emotions and deal with whatever the other individual has said or did and whatever emotions were generated within them because of it. Nowadays we have emotional acuity as a concept and everyone should always be working on being able to determine what they are feeling by name at any given moment. In summation, I believe toxic masculinity fits perfectly because it's just an objectively toxic personality trait to lack self awareness and empathy and behave as though one is better than others, which is found in males and in reality did define masculinity for a long time. As men collectively pull the eff up and learn how to feel (be vulnerable and empathic), we'll regain masculinity as being men who just are men without being toxic. It's that simple. Much love to you and yours. /Jon Bon

Thank you for thoughtful response, and I take your correction. I myself like a lot of things coded as masculine and aggressive-- strategy war games, shooters, heavy metal music among other things-- and these need not be linked to either immaturity or toxicity. It's precisely the inability to handle emotion, and beyond that, to experience emotion as dangerous, as threatening, that shuts down the capacity for vulnerability and compassion. You've given me an idea for a longer for video that talks about the centrality of compassion and vulnerability in medieval narrative of knightly virtue. I still think that "toxic masculinity" has problems rhetorically, because the association with danger and transgression are appealing to those leaning into contempt for vulnerability and empathy, who seek safety in static gender roles and fixed hierarchies.

The only thing I was robbing myself of while writing my research paper was an abundance of panic attacks. I still did the research and obviously edited the text, but none of the writing part would have brought me joy, aside from the moment when I would’ve been finished. Essays are still interesting to write though

Pursue the topics that interest you most, the ones that drive your curiosity and imagination. And yes, read broadly and deeply, whether it's the classics or contemporary literature, but let your reading be guided by your pleasure and curiosity more than the prestige or cultural value you perceive to be attached to particular works or authors.

Curious: Do the affixed morphenes in agglutinative languages get added in fixed predetermined orders, or can they be affixed in any order the speaker? Is order important for some affixes and not others?
@IohannesRhetor
@IohannesRhetor 4 ай бұрын
Okay, I looked into it. In agglutinative languages, the order of affixed morphemes is typically fixed and predetermined, rather than being freely arranged by the speaker. Position indicates syntactic function.
