A short time after I arrived in Germany we went out into the field, one of the officers pointed at a Target and told me to figure out and call in the coordinates off the map. The first shell hits the target. The fire support officer called me Eagleeyes. The battery commander on the other hand called me Eyes of Death. I believe animals do engage in altruism (after reading Richard Dawkin's Selfish Genes, many years ago), but I have some doubt regarding this particular case with the humpback whales. If the whales are altruistic in their actions, when attacking orcas, then that would be awesome; I do want this to be true.

"Altruism" might be a stretch. It seems far more reasonable to suppose self-interest; if it's true that only 11% of Orca attacks are on Humpback whales, that might best be interpreted as the result of a relatively successful deterrence policy, rather than a cause for surprise as to why Humpback whales attack Orcas. It makes sense to suppose that the whales know the Orcas are opportunistic hunters, and therefore need to be taught that attacking Humpback whales calves will get them killed.
