Often, depending on the harvesting conditions, I do not have to rinse the goldenrod plants for an external preparation. I will shake them off and let them sit out for a while so any insects can crawl away, and shake the dust off. But you could definitely give them a quick rinse in cold water and shake them out well, and proceed to let them dry. For tea and tinctures that are going to be taken internally, or herbs growing lower to the ground, I do rinse off the plants in a colander, roll in a towel and pat lightly. Or use a salad spinner to get as much moisture off as possible.

Thanks, Lottie! Last fall (2023) was the first time I gathered and dried goldenrod. I was surprised that the dried leaves made a pretty good herbal tea, surpassing dandelion root as my previous favorite. I have not yet tried the flowers or medicinal applications. I can try in olive oil, certainly. Thanks for sharing what is working for you.

For everyone wondering, here's how to find the same cleaning solution in their respective country: Products have different names, molecules do not. The active ingredient in this particular chemical solution seems to be OXALIC ACID. Which is what I'll buy for a fraction of the price.

I would love to learn to make tinctures and salves. I'm a Michigander as well, but I don't know my native plants very well. I did plant a few this year. (The skunks tore up a few, so I'll have to try again). I did enjoy the blue vervain and seeing a lot of tiny native bees that never have come around before. Do you have any recommendations of books or sites for learning more about how to work with plants (native or not). I may have to look up what plants I have can be made into tisane.

I do have a few Herbal book reviews on my channel. That may be helpful to you Some are specifically on medicine Making. Although being out with the plants and going on plant identification walks with an experienced herbalist is the best way to learn plant identification in my opinion, joining a plant identification group like on Facebook and posting pictures of things that you find can be helpful too. Then go look them up and study them further. I only use the plant identification apps as a starting point not a definitive point because they are known to make errors.

Hmmmm… lemon balm does turn a bit darker once it’s dried. Does it smell burnt? Have you made a tea with it? Does it taste scorched? Now it could’ve been an interaction between the lemon bomb and the hot peppers… I’m not 100% sure though. Trial and error is definitely the way I have learned many things. I hope you get to try it again. Perhaps it’ll lower temperature with just the lemon bomb in the dehydrator, check it often. Or try bundling it and hanging dry.

Are you dehydrating all those plants you pulled? Lemon balm can move out of there, but I hope you didn’t waste it. You could even sell it at the end of your driveway or something. Hard to watch if it was all wasted.
@EarthseedDetroit
@EarthseedDetroit Ай бұрын
@@sly8056 I appreciate your concern and the question. It is hard for me also to think of myself “wasting” any medicinal plants. However, I have had to come to terms with this because it often paralyzes me from taking necessary action. Since it was well after it bloomed and it’s not as potent at that time, I will not be dehydrating it. I also have so much more lemon balm growing in so many other places. I also have a goodly amount already tinctured, as in a few quarts. Sooooo I just had to reconcile with myself that sometimes things can composted and that it’s OK. That is what works for me and I understand that it’s not everyone’s opinion. But thank you so much for commenting.

Thanks for sharing. The old ways are more beneficial than most believe. I've always said, plants are the original healers/doctors. I am slowly making my way back to the old ways, by learning what grows native in my backyard, learning the benefits of those plants and herbs. Which brings me to a question. Last year for the first time, I attempted to infuse some goldenrod (Solidago) from some I foraged in a field close to my house. It's been in a jar full of pure olive oil for about a year, I know it says to keep it in a dark cool place for 4-6 weeks, but mine has kind of been there for a year because I forgot about it.... do you think this would still be safe to use? It has no cloudiness, or odor, but I am but a newbie in herbalism. Any feedback would be welcomed, and appreciated. Hope the day has met you wonderfully well!

@@Dheesis thank you so much for your feedback and for watching! Regarding your golden rod infused oil, as long as it does not smell rancid or “off” in anyway, or show any signs of mold or any other kind of contamination, then it is fine to use!

They are not linden leaves they are linden bracts which are part of the flowers, the bract and little flower is the whole flower. Your video is confusing as you persist in calling the bract a leaf. Especially bad info for newbies seeking herbal information.

A few animal and test tube studies suggest goldenrod may help reduce inflammation, relieve muscle spasms, fight infections, and lower blood pressure. It does seem to act like a diuretic, and is used in Europe to treat urinary tract inflammation and to prevent or treat kidney stones.
