is it normal when you lap the girts/purlins that the holes need to be reamed out?
@GWBuildingsАй бұрын
Hello Dan, Eric here, If the holes need to be reamed that is a sign of something else going on. However.... it is not abnormal - a simple issue with anchor bolts being 1/4 - 1/2" off can lead to some difficulty with laps - so it's a consideration of what is easier to do. Most people, even seasoned erectors, can miss minor deviations with bolts, squarness/plumbness of the building, etc... and not catch it until they are flying purlins - at that point - reaming purlin slots is a lot easier than taking the steel down to ream or slot somewhere else. Correct flange lapping and the use of a spud wrench should minimize this. If the holes have to be drilled or moved - it's a good idea to stop work and figure out the root cause - Calling construction support is probably a good idea at that point as well. Thanks

temporary chain and binder or cable x braces really help stiffen the steel and also make the structure a little more ridged until the girts and purlins are installed. and yes having to adjust these for fit is a pain in the butt. it's way better than having the steel back on the ground.

The first span up and desconnecting it from the crane is always the most risky part. It will be standing naked as you called it. Therefore, before desconnecting from the crane, we always put tension belts, like the ones used on trucks, 6 in total, 3 to each direction at the gutters and at the eve. We use the racket to position the span as vertical as possible. Only then we disconnect the crane, then we lift the next span as quickly as possible, fix purlins at the corners and at the eve followed inmediatly the wind braces. Then you have 2 spans up and secured. Only then you can take a breath and continue building. The tension belts we'll usually let them until the structure is complete and they get in the way. Oh the tension belts you fix to whatever heavy thing that may serve, but if you connect it to any vehicle like a fork lift or so, I'll have the keys in my pocket.... you don't want anyone to drive off with the structura attached. And when operating a lift around the belts, make sure a guy on the ground is keeping an eye. One of our teams met disaster when a lift hit a temportary wind bracing cable.

A large metal hanger was being built at MacDill AFB FL, when disaster struck. The error that was made, was installing the rafters, but not fastening them to each other. The wind came up that night, tipping over the rafters, which bent the sills and vertical beams. The building was a total loss.

HI Robert, The latest high visibility collapse just happened about 6 weeks ago in Boise - Very sad - several people died. Large Commercial project - I've poured over the available pictures and can't figure it out. Usually this is erector fault - which can be seen by the frames falling like dominos (as you said) but this one doesn't appear to have failed like that. I know the manufacturer - and they're not the corner cutting type - such a mystery. Thanks for the insight and comment. Eric

I'm a site manager for one of the largest erection companies in the US. This can be stopped with a dedicated temp. bracing plan. Great video. However, depending upon how many frame lines are in a building determines upon if the wall sheets catches more wind than the web of the rafters. You also have to calculate rafter depth and percentage lost due to wind shear on each rafter. On these small buildings shown, the wall sheets will always catch more wind. Once you get into much larger facilities this changes. I'm on my wife's KZbin account BTW.

Were these new construction or replacement windows?
@GWBuildings5 ай бұрын
Hi Allison, these windows were put in as part of new a new construction but they can also be used as a retrofit solution. These windows do not require a framed opening and are a bit less expensive than a traditional new construction window so they make a good option for both scenarios. Really depends on if there will be a finished wall or heavy insulation on the walls to decide if the cost savings is worth it for new construction. Thanks

We took a Sharpee marker and wrote the numbers on all the clips so we wouldn't have that problem. We also used the Sharpee on lots of other parts that had a white paper sticker on them with the part number because the rain was wearing off the sticker.

Hello! Since this was a homeowner build I don't think they really kept track. However, Eric intends to do a video later next year on a 2400 sf building he is building. His intention is to go over every cost down to the penny and explain in detail where to save money and where to have professional contractors. Hopefully that video will go a long way to helping potential builders understand the costs inside and out. Not just for the building but dirt work, foundations, permittine, etc... Thanks

Thanks guys, keep them coming! These videos are very helpful for me as I get ready to build my GWB house! What will you be using for insulation with this one? Do you have any videos that cover closed cell spray foam?
@GWBuildings7 ай бұрын
Hi, This building was not insulated. It is being used for storage of logging and other heavy equipment during the winter months and will not have any electricity or gas hookups. While GWB cannot recommend the use of Spray Foam because it voids the warranty provided from the Coil and Paint vendors - Our president who hosts these videos is a big fan of spray foam. However, extra care needs to be taken to make sure the roof is 100% Sealed. If any water gets trapped between the foam and the panel it will cause the wash coat to fail and the for the panel to rust. While fiberglass insulation will quickly wick moisture away. We're not worried about big leaks here - little unnoticed leaks are the concern. With all of that said - many of our customers have used closed and open cell spray foams with excellent results - just be sure to follow the foam manufactures instruction for the surface preparation of the steel to ensure a good bond. Thanks

Do you use washers on the anchor bolts? Some buildings I see the square ones, some none at all. Nothing like a Banquet at the end of the day! -Cheers
@ericbeavers47697 ай бұрын
Hi @vwav8tr, sorry for the late reply. Washers are not typically required for baseplates. In High Seismic areas on large projects shear can become a concern and a washer may be spec'd by the foundation engineer but usually in situations like that a shear pad or boot will be called out instead. If you would like to put washers on - there is certainly no reason not to. If I am erecting I typically will not use them even if they are available - Washers are usually galvanized and the heavy A325 or A563 nuts are usually black - so it looks a little odd to me. Cheers!

Those templates are a handy thing to have. We had about 48 or so bolts to set with epoxy. I used plywood to create ours, and ran the nuts down far enough to lay the plywood template on the bolts right at the top to help ensure everything was level.
