Would one be able to make changes to title of the book after being issued an LCCN? Would you have to reapply for a new LCCN if there are any changes ( large or small) in the title? Thanks! This is very helpful information

I just found you and subscribed , Question: How do send my ISBN to the printer. (I have wrinten a children book, a college is going to print.). A student has illustrated and made the cover. Now on Bowker I have an ISBN and Bar code. Bowker has created both but I need to know how do I send them to the college ? Aloha

I believe Ingram Spark encourages authors to discount their book so that more booksellers are likely to pick it up. So if you discount the book with Ingram Spark, but choose a higher sales price on KDP, then which retail price do you put in the Bowker template?

I heard someone give an alternative to the phrase as 'Describe, don't explain.' Essentially saying 'Bob was a rude, overbearing man.' is just a bad idea, but saying 'Bob would butt into any conversation he had an opinion on. He'd cut people off mid-sentence and always needed to have the last-loudest-word.' is more engaging when you need to tell. The first bit is telling with no substance, but the second bit is telling with subtext. A character is being described, and it's up to the reader to infer: they're not being told he's a dick, even though they are, but they feel like they've come to that conclusion on their own. Hell, some people might think Bob is right to do those things. It can get a little more complicated depending on the story's perspective, since first-person will tend towards explicit storytelling in most cases. But the general idea is, I feel, good advice.

Thank you. I cannot say that enough. It is immediately clear when an experienced writer is discussing the qualities & characteristics of a writing tool vs someone who is just reviewing the software. You make sense and that shows your experience. It seems like you & I write very similarly (in terms of process) so you have helped me very much here. Again, thank you.

Thanks for the video! Speaking about series and trilogies, I cant figure out if the one I'm writing is a series or a two-set trilogy. The main theme is set on reflection and setting out on a quest to gather specific items. So much to pinder about.

Hi, I have a question. I'm self-publishing a Hardback but will be printing in bulk through China. For the price availability, do I select 'apply direct from publisher' However, I'm also wanting to use the same ISBN for the Hardback in Ingram sparks. Which is Print on Demand. Would I need to get a new ISBN assigned for the 'price availability drop down option for POD'. Or is using the first one okay? Seeing as they're both Hardback. Thanks

Too many "advisors" dispense the "show don't tell" rule because it's an easy rule to identify, criticize, and use as a measuring stick for bad or amateur writing. It, like the "Pirate Code", is more of a guideline. I often use a lot of showing, because that's typically my style. I write like I am directing scenes in a film, but even film needs its pacing. And there's nothing that will jolt a reader like a direct, short, sentence to the gut. Too many times, new writers get "expert" level advice, when they really need to be given the basics at a "beginner" level. Most writers (huge assumption here) that have written for a few years, typically know about these rules, they become second nature to them, in the same way we learn not to overuse exclamation points, we also learn about when to show and when to tell.

Thank you that was very helpful. I'm hoping to self publish as soon as I get my LCCN. IF put September & end up publishing sooner does that make a difference?
@roughwriter3 ай бұрын
That’s great! So far as I know, it shouldn’t matter if you publish sooner than the date you put on your LCCN request, since I think it’s just an estimated publication date anyway.

I had a beta reader (more accurately, my beta reader's granddaughter who was in college and thought she knew everything about writing from that one course she took) who, at the beginning of my YA story wrote "show don't tell" whenever my main character talked internally about his day and what was happening in his life - you know - to just set up what was to come in the actual story. Now, I could do that, but where should I stop showing his past and how he came to be in this moment? By that logic, I would need to go back to his birth to show how he became who he is at the moment the story actually starts! And then maybe I should go into how his parents met and how he was conceived!

In Breaking Bad we learn virtually nothing about Walt's past history, everything we truly know about Walt we know from his present actions. This is not because Breaking Bad is a TV show. The entire writer's room was in agreement, character is portrayed by action, not defined by backstory. Maybe you need to consider whether you're the one suggesting an unnecessary amount of detail. 🤯
@tattoodude89464 ай бұрын
@@futurestoryteller It could be that the parts that I "tell" are not necessary, but I find that they help add texture to the character without bogging it down by adding scenes that add very little to the narrative. You may find James Scott Bell's take on the subject interesting.
@futurestoryteller4 ай бұрын
@@tattoodude8946 It's possible your beta('s daughter) recognized that your character was referencing an event that happened recently enough to the present, that actually experiencing it could legitimately make the scene more interesting though. A lot of people don't even understand "show don't tell." It basically means "paint me a picture" it's figurative language, which any writer should be able to understand, so when someone says that to you, your concern should not be about whether or not you can afford the necessary painting supplies. One or both of you could have a misconception about what the advice is actually trying to convey. But it is not necessarily the case that summarizing is "telling" based on this understanding, and simply dictating physical events as they happen (in real time, so to speak) is not showing either. This is why OP comes away with the misconception that dialogue based exposition is never "telling". Because if someone is physically talking, we have "seen" it happen. That's not simply an oversimplification of the advice, but a mistranslation of it.

Like most "rules" that are subjective. It's more of a guideline than a rule.

This is something John Adamus emphasizes. Show don't tell isn't a hard rule but a guideline; sometimes you need to tell vs show. I blame the youtube/social media algorithm that encourages short form nonsense with tips that involve a process like writing that can take many months to over a year.

My fictional creatures in The Last Flight of Pegasus are from mythology. They were not lucky enough to disembark Noah’s ark. The bones of Centaurs, Pan, Lock Ness, Unicorns, Dragons and a Pegasus are found in the lower level of the ark. They had been eaten by a Gargoyle. The Merman and Mermaid are still uneaten…saved in their frozen aquarium. A frozen and uneaten is a Pegasus that made its last flight to the upper level in the ark. Sadly he broke his leg when he landed on an uneven surface and froze.
